Dang, I KNEW I should have waited.
(Not really!) Putting everything together that I've learned from this thread, I cancelled my order at Datavision and caved in to the subliminal message from venne and ordered a set from Audio Cubes.
Reasoning:
1) Each salesperson at Datavision seems to have a different answer as to when they'll be getting the 880C at the store. Are the salespeople at Datavision anything like the salespeople at my local Best Buy? (Most are pretty clueless about electronic products and are a fountain of misinformation.) I noticed that Datavision sells a wide variety of merchandise from flashlights to computer furniture--kind of like my local Best Buy. (Get the connection?) Sure, they can look something up on a computer--that doesn't mean that the computer's database is current or correct. (And, sure, the salesguy put your name on a reservation list WITHOUT taking a deposit. If the product shows up ten days or ten months from now, what does he care? By the way, my local Best Buy has reservation lists, also
.)
2) Pioneer representatives have said that the product won't be available until at least June or July in this country. Good enough for me. I'm ready to buy NOW, however, and the only way I can do that is to purchase the imported version.
3) Audio Cubes is a well-established sponsor of this forum and several people have ordered their DIR800C from them without a hitch. (I put my order in yesterday and received a tracking order number today. My kind of service!)
4) I'm additionally looking to buy a stand-alone pair of the Audio-Technica Dolby headphones that have been been reported by Takashi to work fine with the Pioneer base unit: (

What if the US version and the Japanese version of the DIR800C are somehow not compatible? (One less worry.)
Despite, the horror stories I've heard about Datavision, every time I've contacted them they've been very polite, helpful, and probably (in their minds) forthcoming. I just don't think that even THEY know when they'll be receiving their shipment of the DIR800Cs. Like all retailers, they want to garner sales, and non-committal responses such as "Any day now; early next week; by the (beginning) or (the end) of the month..." often placate most customers.
If I had been more patient, I would have saved some bucks, but as it's been said before, "Time IS money."
