-Faith
-Pornography
-Disintegration, very dark, very good

Joy Division
1st two CDs are dark masterpeices, and to get important non album material you must get the "substance" collection.

Sisters of Mercy
Dark lords of goth, all their great material was released on early EPs, fortunately they are all collected on the CD "some girls wander by"

Bauhaus
Best way to go here is the two CD collection "1979-83 Vol 1&2" contains all their best known hits, including hard to find non album tracks.

Depeche Mode
They also have a dark trilogy, maybe more like lights turned down vs dark, but still more serious than earlier material.
-Black celebration
-Music for the masses
-Violator

Many more, but don't want to overload you.

I picked up violator, and Bauhaus' "in the flat field" and "crackle" albums. These are quite good. I think i am really starting to prefer the older dark music.

all the music you guys posted reminded my of The Church. Kinda dark tempo music.

SWANS, dark and heavy as hell at the beginning and then moved into slightly more folky territory with incredibly layered arrangements full of strings, guitar, percussion and vocals. Michael Gira their singer is definitely reminiscent of Murphy from Bauhaus and Nick Cave, actually the music sounds sorta like Birthday Party/Bad Seeds depending on what period you listen to. definitely not synth-poppy like the cures middle period tho. they also had a female singer named Jarboe who has an amazing but could get probably even lower and scarier than Gira. definitely check them out for dark, beautiful music rooted in the 80's

but you guys forgot to give album suggestions for two of my other personal favorites listed at the start of this thread: the smiths and the pixies

smiths - louder than bombs
(amazing album, finishing with the crusher "asleep". tells me that the 80's weren't the complete waste of time that i always thought they were.)

pixies - doolittle (some say it's their best, and i wouldn't try and sway them from this theory)
pixies - surfer rosa (contains the song "where is my mind?" which, in my opinion, makes the album worth buying alone. you know, that song they played during the credits in fight club?)

Yeah, I appreciate the Cure more in the Smiths/Pixies/etc. post-punk vein than as a 'dark' band. I'll take the usual in the favorite album picks:

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead - Cemetry Gates, Bigmouth Strikes Again, The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. Need I say more? Perfect pop music.

The Pixies - Doolittle - Not a bad song in the bunch, now this is real rock music. Favorite include Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away. I agree that Surfer Rosa is also essential though.

Pixies: I prefer Surfer Rosa for an "alternative" album -- Bone Machine is my favorite Pixies song -- but Doolittle is definitely more accessible.

Smiths: one of my favorite bands of all time (I've actually met Morrissey

). "The Queen Is Dead" is IMO the best complete album by far, but "Louder Than Bombs" has a lot of great tracks, including Please Please Please, one of the best songs of the 80s. For a good sampling of both albums, check out the import "The World Won't Listen." Another great album is the import "Hatful of Hollow" which is like a cross between "The Smiths" and "Louder Than Bombs." If you can find copies of "The World Won't Listen" and "Hatful of Hollow" definitely get them!

The Smiths still haven't gotten their due and Morrissey is WITHOUT a record lable for the last several years. Unbelievable.

MacDEF,
Where did you meet him? What was he like?

As for the Cure, their big "problem" was that there are really 2 Cures: one dark and droning, the other poppy and accessible. I confess, I only like the Cure's pop material. They are another totally underrated band with loads of classic songs/singles.

Yes yes MacDEF, tell all! *hero worship* Morrissey is some sort of idol of mine.... what every lonely teenage boy should aspire to, possibly.

i've been listening to nothing but the smiths and morrissey for the last week. man, i am depressed. listening to depeche mode for straight for a month does not even do that to me. the smiths aren't dark or anything, but they seem to really depress me for some reason.

markl, insanefred: I was in a Tower Records store very late on a Sunday night (one of those times when there's hardly anyone in the store), and while browsing through some CDs I looked up and thought to myself "hey, that guy looks like Morri... OH MY GOD!"
biggrin.gif

I actually walked up to him and started talking; he was a really, really nice guy, who seemed totally flattered that a) I knew who he was; and b) I really liked his stuff. He was in town for a radio interview and to visit friends, and it turns out that he doesn't drive, so when he visits the U.S. his friends drive him everywhere (at least back then; I don't know about now).

The stupid thing is that I didn't get his autograph or anything. I just talked to him for ten minutes or so and forgot (which I guess is a better story than an autograph, anyways

).

I think it's tacky to ask for autographs unless the artist/star is at an event specifically to be seen. I mean, if you were just hanging out, would you want to start signing things for people? I feel like it's taking advantage of somebody who's just out and about, wanting to be themselves and not 'a star'.

If I was a popular person (certainly not on this board
wink.gif
) I would be very happy to talk to anyone on the street, so long as they were pleasant and polite, but I would feel a little uncomfortable signing stuff for people.
