The Cure...

If you guys want a good dark 80s album, get "The Blurred Crusade" by the Church. This album has great lyrics and excellent giutar work. The Church have a lot of real neat stuff. EMI is releasing digitally remasterd albums by the Church in June. "The Blurred Crusade" is on the list.

Hehe, my bauhaus cd was the first one I chose for the mystery box(see thread in members section).
Try a band called the the. Front man is Matt Johnson...also includes former smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
the the's cd Dusk rocks.

I agree about the The -- great band. I have all their albums except for the most recent one. millerdog, have you heard their other CDs? Dusk is very good, but my least favorite

I have Mind Bomb..but prefer to listen to it...uh.."very loud, very late, very alone...& with the lights turned very low!"
I want to get some pre "dusk" stuff...but other interests prevail...
the the does rock.

Wow, I can't believe people remember The The! My favorite The The album is Soul Mining. It's an album 20 years ahead of its time. Despite 1983 synth technology, it still sounds fresh today. Another great under-rated band of the '80's.

I finally got to see the Cure live a couple of years ago. Great show.

Hero and Heroine by the Strawbs is a great dark theme album....although from the 70's not 80's.

The The's Infected is far and away my favourite album by them (with Soul Mining a close second [contradiction intended]). I also really like Matt Johnson's album Blue Burning Soul which was later re-released as a The The album (Matt Johnson is The The).

Oh, and PS I also like the Cure. A lot. Disintegration, Wish, and Bloodflowers are all stupendous.

They really need to release Show on DVD. That is one of the best concert films ever, after Stop Making Sense, Home of the Brave, and a couple others.

-Faith

-Disintegration, very dark, very good

Joy Division
1st two CDs are dark masterpeices, and to get important non album material you must get the "substance" collection.

Sisters of Mercy
Dark lords of goth, all their great material was released on early EPs, fortunately they are all collected on the CD "some girls wander by"

Bauhaus
Best way to go here is the two CD collection "1979-83 Vol 1&2" contains all their best known hits, including hard to find non album tracks.

Depeche Mode
They also have a dark trilogy, maybe more like lights turned down vs dark, but still more serious than earlier material.
-Black celebration
-Music for the masses
-Violator

Many more, but don't want to overload you.

I just got my first sisters of mercy LP today. It is a single of "This Corrosion" Man...that is such a cool song. I must find more.

Get the best of from 97 Galore. Focuses on later material. Sound quality is phenonemal. "Just Like Heaven" has all these subtle effects that are lost on the car radio. I think there's even a newer one, but I can't vouch for sound quality.

Well, I'm sitting here now listening to that other Cure comp, "Greatest Hits" (2001). Yes, this one has immaculate sound quality as well, although a *bit* on the bright side vs. Galore (1997), which is excellent. You can always get both, as there are songs on each you can't get on the other. And when I say "sound is good", I remind you that some of this material dates from a time when they still thought synth-horns were a *good* idea.

Ouch do they sound dated on "Why Can't I Be You". Also, for the uninitiated, maybe hearing Robert Smith's "singing voice" in all it's modern re-mastered glory is maybe not such a good thing!

He's an "acquired taste" well worth developing though.

As I stated earlier, to me, the Cure are more of a singles band than an album band (although I also think "Disintegration" is their high-water-mark). Man, so much of this stuff dating from "Let's Go to bed" on is just so much fun, and ten times more creative than most of the music being played during the era. They really know how to make an entertaining track, and it's not all "sad person music".

For you Cure fans, they recently recorded an amazing show in Europe of their "official" Trilogy Albums (Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers). They performed ALL three albums, in order... the complete albums! This will be available on DVD soon. Should be awesome... if it doesn't come out in pure album form, I'll have to make CDs by ripping the audio from the DVD like I did with U2's Elevation 2001 DVD.
