She sounds amaaazing.
Of course, let's face it guys. She still doesn't
quite measure up to the oldschool all-time greats of female voacls. I am, of course, talking about Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin
I often think of Amy Lee as being sort-of like a more contemporary, more goth/metal Stevie Nicks. . .great female singer/songwriter, who is wholeheartedly against using sex-appeal to market herself because she has too much self-respect to do that crap. . .go her! Of course, Amy Lee is also a classically trained pianist (little known fact right there) who can play at near-virtuoso levels when she feels so-inclined, which is simply awesome. It's funny that in the video above the guy is the one shown playing the piano, because I guarantee you the one actually playing the piano in the studio was Amy Lee, haha.
Speaking of Stevie Nicks, no discussion of great female vocals is complete without some mention of her, in my opinion. Songs like Rhiannon and Landslide have always truly moved me. . .her voice has a, dare I say, almost
eerie quality to it, would be the only way I could even start to put it into words. Here, lemme try putting it into words a little bit better. . .it's like the kind of feeling you get when you are deep in some woods somewhere, hit a patch of true Old Forest, and suddenly realize that everything around you is completely silent but for the slight sounds of Mother Nature, as far as the eye can see to the horizon. . .you feel like you're transported back in time, to a time before all the silly trappings of modern civilization, or something. That's the kind of feeling that Stevie Nicks' vocals give me, at their best. Weird, right?
