Koss KSC-35's for me followed ever so closely by the SR60's and finally for those that like to splurge just a bit more...the Ety 4P's with S cable adapter.

Hands down, these are the best in low medium and upper price categories. (I think anything above Ety's would still be upper priced, maybe ludicrously priced...

A900's...my first "audiophile quality" phone...but for the money spent I don't think I could possibly be happier with 'em.

Depending on one's needs, tastes and budget, in approximate price order:

Philips HP170 / Koss KSC-35 / Senn HD497 / Senn HD280 / Sony MDR-CD580 / Grado SR60 / Sony MDR-CD780 / Sony MDR-V6 / AKG 240S / Senn HD580

Edit: And maybe the Beyer DT531, it certainly gets a lot of positive comments from those with reliable ears, but I've never heard it.

KSC-35 is really hard to beat since it's only $30. HD580 for around $120 is a no brainer.

The SR60 and HD580 are exactly what you state them to be, nothing else competes with them on a purist audiophile level at the price point.

Cheers,

I bought HD 580s at Etronics last week for $149 US. Not sure about shipping charges to Canada since I had mine shipped to a friend in the U.S. who will deliver them to me. However, even after shipping and currency exchange, I suspect that they'll still cost far less than $450 CDN. Probably closer to $250 CDN.

No one's mentioned the Philips SBC HP890. I don't have the experience to compare them to other phones, but they have gotten very good reviews, saying they are not all that different from the Sennheiser 600s.

Here in Sweden you can get them for 549 SEK (=76 USD) incl VAT excl shipping at www.netonnet.se.

It seems to me that they give a very good bang for the buck, and then the question is how much bang you want to pay for, of course...
