It is not within human nature to respond well to being hit for a reason which is unknown to the one being hit. It is, though, at the same time, not within our nature to explain ourselves BEFORE hitting somebody. Most people, once explanations are vocalized, will not be in any mood to strike somebody.

It's a terrible situation. Hitting your kid never works.
