The Altmann Tera Player - Thread

It was €640 originally and the highest I saw it for sale while doing my house insurance annually was €12,400 so today's price is a comparitive bargain!

For the record I'm now using my Tera with Aurisonic Forte and for the first time I prefer the output from the socket near the middle. Completely different sound signature to my long-lived Heir Tzar 90s and with poor recordings the bass seems to be lacking (which is saying something being as the Tzars are BA) but I'm going to give the combo a while to grow on me.

€12,400?? Amazing...

I would love to try the new ATH-CKR100 is, they are 80 ohm and I loved the previous model ATH-CKR10 bit that was only 16 ohm.

Also if you can try the Meze Rai Penta, they are great both sound and comfort with fantastic build quality to match the Tera-Player.

Surely that $12400 figure must have been a typo? $1240? Often lack of bass is to do with a poor headphone stage isn't it - correct me if I'm wrong - unable to deliver much current, only voltage swing? I get that with small players like ipod nano et (whilst also a poor general sound quality at the same time). Having said that, there are some pretty reasonable single-chip, class-D headphone amplifiers out there, the one in the Flare Audio Flares range bluetooth module is not bad at all. The internals for that bluetooth module must be about $5 .worth.

I've just had a quick look on the wayback machine and the highest I found was €10,000 here, I'm sure it was €12,400 at one time.

Lack of bass with a Tera is often due to the high output impedance with crossovers (circuitry to filter bass to one driver and mids/treble to another, or splitting mids/treble to separate drivers too) and BA drivers, the Aurisonics have a dynamic driver for bass and no crossovers I was expecting them to work fine as the ASG 1.3 I had years ago did. Don't think it's an amping problem as when the recording's good they sound right but maybe the comparison between 'right' and 'thin' with bassy IEM is more exagerated than with one that's less bassy to start with.

Where were you back in September when I asked for recommendations for a replacement?! Those 80 ohm ATs sound like they'd be a good match, though as they're dynamic drivers the impedance isn't important - my JVC woodies are 16ohm and I have no complaints with them (except that they stick out and are open so are unusable on a bike...)

Hopefully I'll be happy with what I have for years again, don't really want to be sucked back into the wallet draining world of head-fi.

Over the years I have helped many people regarding questions and advice about the Tera-Player, however I can help to only what's possible and to what I have tried myself.

To this day, the Tera-Player remains one of the best inventions in the portable audio domain , it just happens to fullfil all the criteria I was looking for when I researching for the best portable music player.

I am very happy with the Koss Porta Pro headphone modified and they do get cheaper by years, and also the SanDisk blue SDHC class 4 are extremely cheap, same price as a coffe for 32 GB if you know where to look.

Sometimes I want some isolation from the outside world to enjoy the music to another level and I am seeking the comfort offered by earbuds, just I don't want to invest in the CIEMs.

Earphones such Meze Rai Penta or Westone W series offer the ultimate comfort for me and now I am in the search for such item that will work extremely well with my 2019 Stealth model.

Hopefully I will find it at CanJam London this summer. Once again, I do believe that the Tera-Player is an extremely well build, designed portable music player and I wish more people would have acces to it and have a listen.

A fact :
I never get bored when listening to the Tera-Player.

Thanks for the response. I already have 2 Tera players: the orange arrows version and the stealth. Unless there is an appreciable difference, I won't be tempted to get another one as last time I checked in the mirror I am not Jeff Bezos.

If none of your players are made at least in 2014 then is a big deal. That's the year some minor but important changes were made.

Agreed on the longevity - bought mine from musicday in January 2013 and it's still going strong. I did need to solder the headphone socket on as it seems one set of pads was missed when it was made, it worked fine for years before becoming a problem so not surprised it slipped through quality control.

What changed apart from the random algorithm?

More RAM to handle better, pretty much all sorts of SDHC and SDXC and maybe the ARM program have been revised.
Did you take photos of the internals when you opened yours? Definitely that will avoid the warranty, but since you don't have it anymore, more likely Charles will not fix it if you have a problem, I think is mentioned in the manual.

Not meaning to complain but to claim under warranty you need the original invoice, I asked you for it on 24/1/2013 and got no reply so no warranty for me. I asked Charles anyway when it broke and he didn't want to fix it and said I could use the other socket (which he prefers) - not sure if this was a joke as it's hard to tell in an e-mail! It's a couple of seconds soldering and fixing it was better than paying shipping to be without my Tera for at least a week anyway. Who needs a warranty anyway when it's built like a tank, it's been abused for 6 years and is still fine... The only thing I wouldn't mind is gettng some new buttons as the orange is faded through use but that's never covered under warranty.

More RAM probably means better battery life which is always good, better card compatibility would also be good but my collection isn't big enough to need lots of cards so I'm happy with my original model and the cards I have.
