The Altmann Tera Player - Thread

The Tera Player will never reproduce ‘sonic truth’ as it’s been neutered to attenuate the extreme ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ concomitant with high-res music. As a very early TP owner (mine cost €500) I’d recommend buying one secondhand if you pay around €750 but no more. In my honest opinion paying anymore is unnecessary, as my HiBy R6 far exceeds the TP sonically, has greater functionality and is less IEM/headphone dependent. Having said that, the TP is virtually indestructible and it’s loyal fans are truly a force to be reckoned with.

I heard this thing costs over grand, not too cheap. My friend thinks original vw buggy is the best car ever so perhaps, it could be the same rationale
where some people find this device so attractive regardless of its sonic capacity. I am not sure..I cannot say much without hearing one but I didn't think this would surpass other dap of its price range.

Have spent thousands of USD on players and IEMs last couple of years, TP is still the my favourite DAP sound-wise, I do own a WM1Z when i really want to navigate my collection with a screen, but I dont like its sound as much as the TP, and TP paired with Sony Just Ear MH-2 (Monitor) is easily the best sounding portable combo i have ever heard.....If anything can be better, all i wish is someone make a DAP with the sound of TP, and comes with a screen......

I am fascinated by this player. No screen, very expensive. Apparently sounds great with portapros. Can this sound better than lotoo touch, Cayin n8, ak sp1000....

Thank you for having the courage to admit this please mention what other headphones)earphones have good synergy with the Tera.

I have tried R2R2000, it is nowhere as good as TP sound-wise (it has powerful bass, but the sound is nowhere as organic or refine as TP), plus it sucks in UI, very lag, totally unacceptable as a 1k+ DAP IMHO.....

Regarding pairing with TP, I would say it is very subjective, but i do find Etymotic ER4SR a good match with it (And it is my main IEM before i got the Sony Just Ear MH-2 [Monitor] recently), the Sony Just Ear is essentially an improved custom made ER4SR, they share very similar sound signature, the Just Ear is even better, being more revealing, organic and neutral sounding (a flat FR i believe), some people may prefer a more powerful sounding (bassier AND/OR bigger sound stage), but the combo with TP is simply the sound i am after.

Sony Just Ear MH2,( Monitor) is CIEM.
I am looking for IEM, something like ATH-CK100, or JVC. Also the Meze Rai Penra sounds great with the Tera.

Right now the tera costs more than 3k euros.... I had one in the past and only if I am really crazy I would give such amount for this player, what I find very strange is that so many people creticise AK, LOTOO OR SONY for the price of their TOTL daps, and find a screen less high impedance player that can sound very good but with the wrong marriage with iem or headphones can sound terrible bad,acceptable, and if anyone says a bad thing is almost crucified... And yes the Tera creator is.... Never mind

I have one 2019 model coming next week. Charles is making it as I type this.Tera player has remain the only portable music player that i really enjoy.
The price is high, but is really worth it.
If I were to choose only 1 portable music player from anything else out there, Tera will be my choice.
Once again, this player came out in 2011 and is still number 1 in my opinion.
Regarding, Charles Altmann he is a truly genius and can make the Tera sing like Rob Watts can make his DACs sing .

Is your choice, I have to respect, but for more than 3 k Soundwise i don't think is worth, the TOTL market is full of refined and organic sound players that have power and are more universal, they play very well with top Iems and headphones, but play acceptable well with diferent matches in term of impedance and sound carácter of other Iems and headphones, I remember when I had the Tera I plugged an HIFIMAN re600 and it played like a battery radio , that is not acceptable for a gear of this price, other thing that I don't understand is you are always asking about the screen quality of other devices, oled bla bla, and don't care about buying a more expensive screen less player, made be a genius with lack of respect by others opinion, Simplicity and humility are things that I was taught to value

Denis is easy: what for others is considered valuable, doesn't have to be the same for you.
I look at the Tera as a future investment. It will play music and will last many years. Can we the say same thing about a player with a screen? Probably not, will slow down in the future that's for sure.
And not to mention about the size or the Tera Player, only 80 gr !! And doesn't even get warm, temperature always the same.
Also regarding your questions about OLED.
When a company makes a top end portable music player I prefer to have OLED instead of LCD screen, just personal choice.

You don't buy another Dap because you like Tera and Tera is Tera from the beginning , if that small genius make another dap the Teramaster or Teraultra you can put your investment in the toilet, the other brands make research to get better and better, this genius only make price updates, in the financial department yes he is a genius

Also the full size open back headphones Pioneer SE-Master 1 sound incredible with the Tera as the headphones are very efficient.
Just change the original cable with a better copper one, shorter.
