The AKG K7XX Massdrop First Edition Thread

Thank you Colgin,
I am not a huge fan of warm or not clear and detailed brights part of that because I have partial hearing loss in high frequency region so bright sound signature makes it easier for me to listen.
If I am keeping my Q701 then probably I will mod them to balanced cans and hope I can hear noticeable improvement

I'm thinking Vali 2 now as the best match for this headphone for the price. I read one review on here saying that the magni 2 isn't a great match for the K7XX. Hopefully I like whatever tube it comes with.

So, from my reading of almost all of the 240 pages of this thread, and Reddit, etc., it appears that the K7xx would be an overall better performer and scale better than the HD598?  But, with the HD598 price being $80-$100 less than the K7xx, what about from a value perspective?

I would be running either of them from a dedicated tube CD player > amp > hp's.

Music would be blues, acoustic and vocals.

Any opinions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi!

I have them both and my vote for your specific genres would go to the HD598.

Cheers.

I haven't got mine in yet, but a lot of people put these in the same their as the hd6x0 series and AKG k712. At $200, they are certainly a bargain it would seem.

in that case the k7xx will probably be better in value. Also if running tubes make sure the tube amp can handle low impendence headphones well. Otl tube amps arent ideal for this. Hybrids or otcs like the lyr or appj will work pretty well if you go tubes. Otherwise solid state is the way to go.

Had the HD-598, still have the K7XX.  For your genre of music I would go with HD-598.  Not knowing what type of amp you have also figures in to the HD-598 recommendation since they are fairly easy to drive.

Wow,

Thanks for the feedback.  To be honest, I wasn't expecting the nod for the HD598's for me, given the subject of this thread (K7xx).  Your contrarian views are appreciated.

Regarding the 598 though (sorry to get off topic), is whatever bass they have fast and tight?  I'm not a basshead but I don't like sloppy bass.

Thanks.

Mine arrived today. i almost buy the vali 2 for them but a lot of people told me that the APPJ is way better. So i order the APPJ 1502 tube amp for them, hope it pairs well https://www.massdrop.com/buy/appj-1502a-tube-headphone-amplifier.  (with bifrost uber analog DAC)

Are the vocals of the K7xx upfront or recessed, also are they realistic in timbre?

Definitely not recessed, but not what I'd call up front either.  Voices sound quite realistic in timbre to me and it compares favorably to many other sub $300 headphones here.
