The AKG K7XX Massdrop First Edition Thread

Ah, for shame...

"The drop has ended!
Want to bring it back? Request it! After 200 requests, we’ll contact the vendor to re-launch the drop."

So this is all lies? boo.

Not a lie, I assume it takes time to go from votes to confirming with the manufacture and working out the details for a drop. The bigger the drop the longer it will take and I would expect this drop to be huge.

I don't think that's true. I've followed the entire 200+ pages of the massdrop discussion & I do not remember seeing that.

I recall seeing it somewhere in all the posts, but not sure where. Definitely I do remember the comment though, stuck out in my mind at the time.

OK, found this post on page 20 in Massdrop K7XX discussion thread.

Quote from Will: "These are based on the 702 65th Anniversary edition. I've been chuckling watching all the speculation swirl around when the drop description is pretty clear."

Will is the massdrop staff member who organized this drop, so if anyone knows what these headphones are... he does. I think that should settle all this rampant speculation. The K7xx are based on the K702 65th annies.

To be fair, I am not sure massdrop has any better idea than us what these cans are. That blurb is probably just what AKG sent them. K7XX will go down as the mystery headphone...

Their description sounds like either AKG made the drivers more sensitive or it's just marketing BS.

Using the same dynamic driver technology as the K702 65th Anniversary Edition, the open back headphones have been tweaked to deliver an extended frequency response and a wide, locationally specific soundstage that puts you closer to the source than most cans. The highs were boosted by an innovative flat-wire voice coil, the mids were brought up to better balance the range, and the lows were jacked up by 3 dB for fully immersive sound imaging.

It states that they boosted the highs, mids, and bass so all they did was make it more sensitive. You can't boost the whole FR and expect the sound to change much. This might be why cone breakup occurs well before the Q701. They should really think about fixing the max input power rating of 200mW since it looks like they can't handle anywhere near that amount.

The major thing that bugs me about the sound is the huge dip around 3K HZ. Vocals, especially female, lack extension and doesn't sound as natural as my speakers (BX5a) or IEM (DBA-02). Removing the foam discs helps but it makes it a tad bright. It also makes it noticeably more open and airy, sounds kind of like the original K702 with a bump to the mid and upper bass. Bumping the 3K range with a parametric equalizer also helps but I don't really like using EQs.

You're right. Let's start a breakthrough discussion about the pads (soft or hard, angled or not, made of suede or delicate pig's ass skin, whatever) and some more comparisons with K701/702/712/Annies.

Or why dont we bring it back to rattle issues on test recordings that rarely aproximate what people actually listen to, discuss and worry about import fees, draw conclusions on their sound without using amp, or compare the Chinese and Austrian-made build quality while we are at it?

I recall seeing it somewhere in all the posts, but not sure where. Definitely I do remember the comment though, stuck out in my mind at the time.

Here we go:

"The flat wire voice coil is also used on K712 (not sure about 65 Anni) and both the K712 and 65 Annie's had the 3dB bass enhancement over the K702 & Q701. Do these have an additional 3dB of bass? The frequency plots do look different but I cNt find any on the same scale so it's hard to know for sure which these are most like, the K712 or 65 Annie's? I have emailed AKG to find out. I am hoping they are simply a Chinese manufactured version of the K712. I want the studio focused voicing. I have grabbed a set anyway as I can always sell them on and probably not lose anything."

"Ok, so had this reply from AKG.

The K 7XX is a strictly limited edition of 2000 pcs special produced for massdrop.
Its based on the K 712, so the techncal specs are equal.

I have replied to try to confirm that it will sound more like the K712 than the 65 Annies's, which is what i am hoping for. It seems my "Chinese K712" theory was correct."

"Ok, so just had this reply from AKG.

It is close to the K 702 65th because of the special earpads which are different to the standard ones.
So, from what I can gather from these 2 emails is that it is based on the K712, but has the 65th Anniversary ear pads. So I'm guessing the earpads on the K712 are different to those on the 65 Annie's? It seems the Annie had different, flat pads earlier on and later ones had the same angled pads as the K712, so the K7XX is a Chinese K712 with the flat pads of the first run Annie's. Does that sound right?"

"After re-reading what I wrote to AKG and their replies, it seems that they will be closest to the 65 AE because of the earpads. If you were to change the pads for angled ones, I'd guess they will then be closer to the 712."

I will be getting my K7XX Massdrop First Edition with the second group in mid February.  There seems to be a lot of speculation about the genealogy of these headphones and drivers and ear pads and headband and made in China and blah blah blah.  My question is: HOW DOES IT SOUND?

The K712 pads are not angled and never were, the K712 pads are flat. Only the K701/2 and Q701 have angled pads. The K702 65th, K712, and K7XX all have flat pads though it seems their shape and possibly density is a bit different between them. The K712 pads are more like a deeper Ring-like shape. The original annie pads are more donut like and not as deep. From what my friend tells me is that the K7XX pads are firmer and harder than on the K712 but the shape seems the same as the K712. So if the K7XX pads are denser than the K712s it will help account for their sonic differences if they are supposed to be the same headphone driver wise, the Chinese models could also sound a bit different.

You will find out how it sounds for you when you get one.

I think it highly depends of equipment you driving them with, they like power IMO. In my setup they are much more power hungry than my DT770-80 Ohm

I asked a fellow headfier who has K702AE and bought K7XX and he said they sounded exactly the same to him. He found the build quality of K7XX to be quite similar to his Annies also.

Here is another opinion of a highly respectable reviewer on head to head comparison of K712 and K7XX:

I really don't get what's so difficult.

Q701 smoother add Annie or K712 pads you get warm, smooth less peaky.

K712 which I believe is just a K701 driver with the K712 pads and more dence foam. The result? Peak upper mids, brighter more airy extended but with warmth.

Yes the difference are not exactly M50 to W1000x but with trained and experienced ears you will hear it.

On an other forum I was trying to explain this a lot but it's circles and circles like here lol.
