Hi there,

I was once happy. I was once normal.

I started out wanting to buy a nice set of speakers for my desktop, just for music. Very simple.

Somehow, I ended up here.

I remember reading "Stay away. Your wallet will thank you", shaking my head and laughing. "That will never happen to me" I remember thinking.

That was then. This is now. Things have changed.

Now I know what a DAC is. Now I know which amps are good. Now I know which ABS housing Gary uses in his PA2v2.

Why do I know such things. Why do I now talk about the K1000 like a beloved relative that was taken away by ze germans.

The soda housing that I dearly loved all my life has just had it's exclusivity taken away. A few days ago, cans were what I wanted when I felt thirsty.

Not anymore. There's a new can in town. His name is Mr. Sennheiser.

I suddenly have the urge to include strange text at the end of my emails, understood only by people who burst into tears everytime someone talks about using the "nice complimentary headphones" they received on the airplane.

That was then. This is now. Things have changed.

On a serious note, I would like to give thanks to this site. It has taken me from knowing absolutely nothing and given me every last bit of information I required to purchase the right gear, know what to expect and what to look out for.

Thank you ALL!

regards,
Chuck

Thanks for the welcome guys, look forward to going broke together.

Speaking of going broke, I know I just started, but I have some catching up to do. So after blasting the 280s for a week, next items on the immediate hit list are:

1 - Shure SE210s

I love the HD280s already, no problem there. But, they're not exactly the most portable cans and wearing them out does give you the 1980s pornstar look. I will relegate them to home use and take the SE210s out and about with my newly Rockboxed iPod. Now, I don't want to spend too much, hence the SE210s. Heard good things about them, though I'm also open to suggestions.

2 - Need to get a DAC

Listening to FLAC files via onboard sound (both PC and MAC) is not cool at all. I've been looking at the ZERO, only problem being that it's not USB. But, I've read the reviews and it seems to be ok, so I may get that and a cheap sound card with the correct outputs I need. On the USB end, the UHA-3 is a possibility and also the Super Pro.DAC 707 USB. Also the HeadRoom Total BitHead. I tried using the "For Sale/Trade" forum to see if anyone had a used unit, however, you need to be a member for 30 days and make 50 posts etc, neither of which are happening in the next few weeks. I'll try eBay and see what I can find.

That's pretty much it for now.

Tell me about it. My wallet's still hurting from the purchase of a Darkvoice 332 amp and Diyeden SVDAC04 DAC that I made yesterday. Granted, they were used, but still not cheap. Hopefully it will be worth it

Try the Zero as well!
You can upgrade teh headphone out on it to make it not only a good DAC, but a pretty nice all in one setup.

I agree, you should get the Zero. As long as you have a spdif out on your computer it shouldn't be a problem.

"Head-Fi : Sorry about your wallet" at some point has to be replaced with..

"Head-Fi: Going broke in style"

I'm getting there.

I would say something like the Zero would fit the bill for a good home setup based on what I have read. I would love to hear that unit at some point myself.
