Been pretty much lurking these days but me thinks these jewels are just too evil not to share with y’all so here goes. I received an OEM Teclast T39 2gb DAP (much like a Cowon D2/Meizu SL in size & appearance as I can gather) I scored cheap at an auction a few days back & after charging for a few hrs, I dragged & dropped 40 or so Flacs into it and slid in my fav 15yrs old recabled pair of Sony MDR 805 (which btw is much better than what present Sonys are & a very close match for a Yuin PK1 IMO) and all I gatta say is….Yowwzer Wowwwzzar!!!
its SQ is better than any stock DAP I’ve heard & is a definitive step above my 1g shuffle and heads & shoulders over stock 4g/5.5g/6g ipods & Zune 30gb. Indeed to these noggins, its not much behind my 5.5g 80gb iMod + mod Tomahawk combo (YES, the iMod+amp is better...doh!)!!! And all this unamped & off the T39s ubiquitous headout jack I mite add. The T39s got it all…great clarity, very decent soundstage/imaging, solid upfront mids, detailed highs with a tight impactful bottom end. And yes, I can tell the difference switching btwn lossless & lossy files.
Talking about amp, I did try pairing it with my mod Tommy & it sounded just as good but with even more bass impact esp. on the super inefficient PK1s. there was no degradation in sounds by amping it just off the headout!
The cons u ask?? Well the touchscreen isn’t the most responsive & the OS/firmware does leave a sour taste & the term “intuitive-interface” is definitely not on the menu but Mama Mia…the sound! Well ok if u wave a sharp object & threaten to do the ape dance, I mite admit that the sound siggy leans toward the analytical (but ever so slightly) but I’d say its more neutral than anything else. Output power is fine for IEMs, earbuds (excepting the 150ohm PK1 ofcos) & such but mite be atad under juiced for more demanding cans. Out of a max vol of 40, im consistently at low-mid 20s on the Livewire IEMs, high 20s low 30s on Mylar X3s, 30ish on the Sony ‘buds & maxed out (unsatisfactory I should add) on the PK1s.
Otherwise its pretty much perfect to my ears atleast. O and did I mention the T39 sports a miniSD slot??! Luckily I just happen to have a 4gb miniSD arriving for the cellfon originally but it’ll be shanghaied for duty (for now) on the T39 making it into an acceptable replacement for the (now ex & soon to be sold 512mb 1g shuffle) uber-porty rig. & best of all, the whole shebang’s (T39+4gb miniSD) costing me <$70 – talk about cheapskate heaven!
Ps:FWIW all eq & sound effects were turned off for the above impressions/comments. O & no hiss of any sort ventured anywhere close to these eardrums even with the super sensitive Livewires. For the vids fans, even though Im not planning any movie sessions (the T39s 2.6” QVGA screens not my fav for this), this T39 claims to run WMVs, Xvids & Avi at a full 30fps & indeed, the included Jame Bond:Casino Royale trailer does look very good indeed.
O & I’d like to give thanks to my fellow headfiers (Majkel, Faichui, eternity.pl, etc..) without whose favorable comments, I wouldn’t have discovered these great T39s. thxs for sharing guys.
