I agree...The Oracle was 50hz so never rotated at the correct speed in Australia! I'm currently selling the Oracle...Doesn't the Denon work best on a heavy arm like the technics?

Shame the Oracle is a lovely deck and the Syrinx arm was widely regarded as one of the super-arms of the 1980s up there with the Alphason HR-100s, Ittok, Zeta etc.

If it were mine I would check out Origin Live's motor upgrade which is a drop-in new motor with an external psu / speed box with serveral options for the powersupply etc. turntable power supply - massive upgrade available for ALL record decks

If you have any issues with the Syrinx then I'd contact Audio Origami - Everything from custom-made Tone Arms, Arm Rewires, Turntable set-ups, Custom Speaker parts and High Quality Cables, Terminals and Special extra slippery Bearing Oils and Pure Damper Oils. who used to work with them back in the day and does excellent rewiring and servicing work.

Denon use a weird metric to measure compliance but I think it goes beyond this and they just match older style arms with removable headshells well because of they are themselves a pretty vintage design.

Yes it's perfectly possible to make an idler driven deck outperform a belt drive or direct drive or vice versa if it's designed properly. There are too many other variables involved apart from the way the turntable is rotated, not only within the design itself, but also in how well the end user has it set up.

This is one of the things that can make playing records so frustrating but also give you a great sense of involvment and achievment when you get it all working just so.

What I have found is that the Denon's offer a lot for very little money. The cheaper Dynavectors and Benz really don't improve on them all that much until you get into spending a lot lot more at the Glider or Karat level. I've got a DV-20L and a Karat and the former isn't that much better than a Denon DL103R. As above though it does come down hugely to what works in your set up at the end of the day.

Hey,
the suspension isn't working too well...I think it's not cost effective to fix it...The Syrinx is working nicely, but i need to sell it in order to raise funds for the new table! I think the technics with a naked denon 103 will work nicely, a reliable option!

Have you tried contacting Oracle Audio to see if you can get replacement parts? They still make the Delphi and you may be able to just upgrade the suspension.

I doubt you'll get much money for it with the wrong PSU and a wonky suspension anyway

Another option would be to shelve the Oracle until you can afford to repair it and get Audio Origami to make you a mounting plate to transfer the Syrinx to the SL1200, they are pretty reasonable.
You can recoup some of the money by selling the new arm on the Technics.
Another benefit of this plan is that you can keep your Goldring, which is brilliant BTW and you won't need to worry about finding money for another cart.

I have really been hit...The other day my cart broke! I had to go away on business and the removalists threw it around abit...The cart is messed up...The turntable is fine, the speed is only wonky because it is a syncro motor and we are 50hz or something in Australia..I'm just going to put it on ebay as spares, I can't be bothered to play with it anymore, it has been a nightmare of a project!

Thanks for all the helpful advice though, I put the Syrinx on ebay a while ago to get some funds to buy a new table...They go pretty well on ebay!

I'm debating going for the tacky technics 1200 gold and just wait until I start fulltime work before going too crazy with all this vinyl stuff!

Wow that's annoying. You can still get replacement stylii for those though they arn't cheap. You can also upgrade it to 1042 status as all the bodies are the same.

I wouldn't bother with the pimped up Technics unless you get a mint one 2nd hand for the same price as a brand new SL1200MK2. Don't bother with the MKV or any other version either as the only additions have been to make them more user friendly for DJs which is just more extraneous circuitry,

I'd just get a mkII and stick a Rega RB250 on it which will work well with the Goldring. Otherwise if you are sticking with the original arm then the Denon's are a better bet but I don't think it's going to be anywhere near Oracle / Syinx standards in stock form.

I would probably get hold of a decent but cheap solid state one like the Cambridge Audio 640P to compare them and see if I could live with the downgrade.

Although the Cambridge is very good it's just never going to sound like a valve stage though. Valves arn't really my cup of tea personally but I can admit to seeing their musical strengths.

I also think valves will be an interesting combo with the direct drive Technics / Denon and since you already have the thing I'd be tempted to keep it.

You might also consider the DL103R or even Pro version from EIFL EXPORT HOME PAGE,vacuum tube,valve,amplifier,speaker,mail-order sales which have a slightly less rolled off sounding treble than the stock 103 and may therefore balance the system better.

I would expect to pay 1200 to 1500USD for the Oracle without an arm and maybe 5-750USD for the Syrinx depending on which version and condition etc.

Really? Wow...MK2s go on Audiogon for like 600-1000 without an arm...I don't think I will get close to 1000, but it will be interesting to see how the Ebay crowd reacts to it! Will let you know what kind of prices I get..

I guess they are going to be more common in the USA but in Europe or Australia I would expect more.

So the results are in...The table bombed...$556US...considering it's 120v syncro and won't work in Aus...It's really expensive for US buyers to consider, $250 to get it there...

Also, the arm went for $411USD..alright considering its condition and lack of some parts....

That leaves me $1000 to play with...

technics mk5g with a denon 103 here i come...

I got the Technics MK5G today...Looks awesome! I'm using it with this ordinary shure cartridge that came with it, but I will be ordering the Denon 103 anyday!
