Good score

. I must confess to being slightly envious. That Technics is one of the turntables I used to admire every time I walked pass my local hifi shop many decades ago.
Consider something like the booster oil main bearing cleaning kit sold by Audio Origami - For Sale . I treat all three of my highly priced turntables with it at least once a year.

Thanks for the helpful advice! I'll be treating myself to a Fluid Dampner and a Denon 103 soon...Should hopefully sound quite nice!

I got the denon 103 installed today...It sounds fantastic!!! What a great match with the Wright phono...Cannot believe how much of an improvement the Denon is over the Shure m4...I'm a very happy man

one thing to add...

if you thinking of buying a 1200(s)... 2nd hand is always a good option to save some cash. i have 2, one was 2nd hand the other was brand new... the 2nd hand was probably 5 years old when i got it and its now ~12+ years old - it still works perfectly. I'm just getting into this audio scene but have DJ'd for years. It works fine for mixing music and i assume will be fine for playing audiophile quality tunes too (assuming a few upgrades). So just wanted to point out that you don't have to spend hundreds on these things new. They were build rock solid to begin with, haven't changed since the 70's and are still made in japan today (one of few I'm sure)

Well a big bump from the depths here...I've been happily using my Techics sl1200 for a few months and think it's time for some upgrades! I'm debating chucking a tecnoarm on there with a new cartridge, but don't know if I can get better value from upgrading the cable on the arm...What is the consensus?

Here is a thread I started recently on this subject with loads of old reviews with measurements etc.
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f7/tec...grades-366309/

I have been recently upgrading some Vestax decks along similar lines with a Rega RB250 and I'll post a full comparison when I'm done.

But offhand I'd say the only reason to rewire a Technics stock arm is if you want to keep it in original condition for aesthetic reasons as it's not going to come out costing way less than a new Rega tonearm. In terms of performance the Technoarm is going to be a big step up from the stock Rega as well. To improve on this any further you'd be looking at an SME IV.

Thanks for the great reply...Would you recommend a phono upgrade over a tonearm upgrade?

The Cambridge is a great phonostage which a lot of people use with decks costing thousands and anyway you won't really get the same level of improvment spending money on a more expensive phonostage than you will addressing other weaknesses first.

The general rule with turntables is to upgrade the deck ( motorboard / plinth ) followed by the arm then the cart then the phonostage in that order.

The arm is definitely the weakest link on the SL1200 and while you can upgrade it a lot by rewiring, silicon damping, better quality headshells, bespoke machined counterweights and mods to rare vintage high compliance carts, in the end I think it makes much more sense just to put a better arm on it, an option Technics themselves used to offer but no longer do.

Perhaps they will begin to do so again soon now it's getting so much attention in audiophile circles...

I picked up a KAB modded 1200 from Kevin and love it. It can certainly get pricey but I felt it was worth it to know it was done right. The sound is really something. Especially if you spend a lot of time listening to digital music.

Is the oracle arm board easy to install? Looks like a big process for someone with big hands like myself! I'll get a Tecnoarm...which cart would you recommend with it?

Origin Live or Soundsupports both suply ready-cut Rega armboards which are suitable for any Rega pattern arm including the Michel Tecnoarm. You should check to make sure when you order that they from makes allowances for the VTA adjustor on the Tecnoarm though which widens the required hole a little.

Fitting it is simply a question of unscrewing the old armboard and attaching the new one with torx / hex type bolts provided, and instructions come included of course. It's way easier than fitting a cart for instance.

Me too; mine came in the mail from KAB today and looks exactly like yours. My analogue rig now officially SMOKES my digital rig. I am very happy with this setup. (BTW: I did get the Cardas rewired tonearm + fluid dampner+ external PSU options).
