They hell of reduce the sound, but it's not like turning the volume down on life, if that's what you're wondering. They DO change the sound a bit. For one, you hear your body a lot more...your head becomes microphonic. I tried them in the car, with music blasting, and, well, yeah, it sounded like music, but like I was listening to it at the end of a really long tunnel. I tried them at a metal show (At the Gates), and they helped, but it didn't sound quite right (and actually lowered the overall sound TOO much). I mostly use them at work to block out the idiocy around me, and kill the high freq buzz from the lights and monitors. They are cool, but drop the plugs/phones fantasy...it doesn't work. The freqs that change the least are whatever the hell the human voice range is...that's about the only thing that sounds natural. They are not designed to magically allow music to pass through unmolested just because Ety makes them...they're designed to lower everything, and do it as uncomfortably as the ER4...
