I just got this from Netflix, and I confess I loved every minute of it. Ate it up just like a classic 80s John Hughes movie.
I think this will be seen in years to come as a classic of its genre (teen-sex-comedy). It has it all-- memorable characters, catch-phrases, classic situations/scenes, and like a John Hughes movie, a real meaningful/touching core based on the visisitudes of the American High School experience. The aspect of the future college life-change breaking up high school friendships is an especially moving undercurrent.
I'd be willing to bet the primary actors in this film have a long career ahead of them (Jonah Hill and especially Michael Cera who just excels here). McLovin is a classic character, but you have to feel bad for the actor who portrays him; he may be a great actor, but he nailed this character so hard, he will forever be remebered as "McLovin". In 20 years time on VH-1 he is sadly a "where are they now" subject.
Yeah, the middle third of the film goes off track into darker territory unnecessarily, and the two cops have way too big a role in this (nice way for one of the writers, Seth Rogan, to insure a large part and payday
at the cost of his movie), and it deviates a little too far from the likely reality of these characters a few too many times, but still, it's a great ride, tackling the whole high-school experience from the underdog's POV.
Loved it!
