Hello All,

Looking to get a new pair of headphones, but am looking for a few suggestions.

Use
These will be used primarily at home because I don't like big bulky headphones while I walk to class. I can just use my current Klipsch Image S4 buds for that. So they do not need to be portable or closed, but it also doesn't matter either way.

Music Preferences
Rock
Pop
Rap
Hip-Hop

Sources
Ipod Touch 16GB 2nd gen
Macbook Pro

What I Am Looking For
Accurate, neutral headphones
Good mids and highs with a solid bass but don't want the bass to be overpowering by any means
Comfort
Over-Ear

Budget
$300-$500 including any need for an amp/DAC

I have heard that Grado are great with rock, but I am not excited about how bright people claim them to be. I heard a pair of Bose AE2 that a friend has and those seem very very bright to me and it was too overpowering.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

AKG 701 are the most "neutral" but given your description/preferences, I'm not convinced that's actually what you want.

Matt

You can get a good amp for ~250 that would drive an AKG701 or HD600.

I don't feel the HD598 is in the same class as the HD600/AKG701/DT880.  I've always found it underwhelming even within its price range.

I would vote for the Sennheiser HD-598 (50-Ohm), it's a little easier to drive then those other suggestions.
The Fiio E10 USB/DAC/headphone amplifier should do a fairly good job at driving the HD-598.
Total price $255 to $330, price depends on if the HD-598s go on sale soon.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I did have the HD 600 or the DT 800 in my mind before making this thread.

Would either of these benefit greatly from an amp/dac?

Even the Filo E10 is a USB amp would it still work to plug my Ipod into it? Would I need any other cables?

Oops, did not read your first post well enough.
Fiio E10 would not work with iPod.

I guess go for the E11.
For around $25 you could use the Fiio DAC D3 between the Mac Pro and E11.
