Getting a DAC/amp combo like the EF2A is a great choice because you're going to want a good source too. I'm not a fan of tubes personally, but if you are, the EF2A should be good. There are plenty of other good solid state combos as well. What's your budget?

They are.  They do have plenty of bass, though,
and an interesting way of fitting around the ears.
Also, even though they're closed headphones
they isolate very little because of their loose fit.
 
Another excellent choice IMO, also already mentioned:
Beyer DT880's.

Yeah, they're both made by brands you can trust that have great quality standards. You might think the DT880s kind of weak because of their lightness, but that really helps with the comfort. I wouldn't call them "rugged" anyway.

Yes--with the footnote that some people have reported a screw coming loose from the Denons.  I don't know if this has been addressed in more recent production batches.  Anecdotally it seems to be reported less frequently now than in the past.
