Stick with DT880 or go out for DX1000?

I've been very happy with my DT880 since last summer (previously owned DT990 which slowly killed my hearing) and now pairing it with my new corda opera I can't say anything wrong about the amazing details and soundstage
i'm hearing.

I heard W5000 and it was better refined but lacks the bass for me.
Heard the GS1K and didn't like it at all (heard it with quite a number of amps).
D7000 is way out of my budget.
I'm still not sure the DX1000 would be my cup of tea. I'm looking to get answers from people who know both cans in a way they decided to stick with just one headphone.

I'm not sure what i want to change, could be a different presentation, as i'm with the beyer house sound for two and a half years now.
I expect to have a hall like soundstage (not like the boomed box GS1K) and great nuancing details. Soundstage on the dt880 though big is more like left and right.
What made you prefer the dx1000 over the dt880?
Thanks.

I had the DT880 and the DX1000 with the Meijer Corda Opera w/DAC at the same time. Not at all alike, near as I recall.

The DT880 is open (semi closed), great detail, controlled bass and slightly recessed midrange as well as sparkling treble. The DX1000 had tremendous bass quality and quantity. Not overwhelming but the most bass of the can's I've heard. The midrange was more even than the DT880 and the treble was okay. DX1000 had better soundstage.

As special as the Opera/880 combo is, at the end of the day I discovered I preferred great midrange. I had the K501 and it got the head time. I let the DT880 go. With the DX1000/Opera combo I always thought I was missing something. I don't personally think the amp and headphone pair very well. When I upgraded my source and amp the DX1000 was let go to free up funds. I didn't miss it enough to get another.

Both are good headphones, but very different from each other. Scour the DX1000 lovers thread from beginning to end. Alot of good info in there. Ask them questions. I found the DX1000 owners to be very candid about their favorite headphone.

Why would you consider closed headphones if soundstage is so important to you?

The soundstage on the DX1000 is amazing (bigger than the DT880) and very hall like, because it has a very, very slight echo. Could be a negative point for some, but I like it.

I owned the DT-880 2003 version, now sold. I agree that the 880 has very nice airy treble but the recessed mids always bugged me. The DX1K doesn't have treble quite as nice but they excel at mids, bass and soundstage IMO.

I have heard both headphones. They are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum. DT880 has accentuated highs, DX1000 is a bit dark; DX1000 has accentuated (honky some would say) mids which are a bit love it or hate it (I like them but many don't); DT880 has neutral/light bass versus DX1000 has very powerful bass. DX1000 has a very wide soundstage. There's a chance you will get tired of the DX1000 sound signature - it's very colored. If you have or have heard a pair of HD650's there are definite sonic similarities between it and the DX1000, although the DX1000 has even more bass exaggeration. I have not compared the soundstage of the two so no comments on that angle.

I would never buy the DX1000 blind if I were you - if you're buying a non-neutral can it's really important to know what you're getting.

I do prefer the D7000 to the DX1000, although I know that in Europe the pricing is very different from the US, where the D7K is less money than the DX1K.
