how is turning them on at the same time using a dpdt different from a simple switch which just turns on the psu?

just use a thermistor like cl-80 to control current rush.

If the PPA has diode D1 installed, it should accomplish the same thing- preventing the amp from reverse biasing the supply.

Just as an aside, with all the discussions over time of reverse biasing problems at shutdown, I'm surprised that I don't recall ever seeing this very simple solution offered. In your case, with the PPA, it probably would not do anything more than PPA D1 does for you, but for an amp that isn't reverse bias protected, this is a very elegent solution. Adding a diode has other benefits, of course and I don't think I would want a serious wall powered amp without one, but it is an interesting mental exercise. A diode is also cheaper than upgrading to a DP switch if cost is the main concern.
