Step down from AH-D2000s?
Mar 8, 2009 at 2:37 PM Post #16 of 32
Ok, so my options right now are:

1. Get used ATH A-900 for $170 shipped.
2. Get Beyerdynamic DT770 for $186 non-shipped.
3. Get Beyerdynamic DT990 for $192 non-shipped.

Any other good suggestions?

Closed headphones I like with my non top gear stuff

, are:
BeyerDynamic DT 150
GermanMAESTRO GMT 250.

Other rather good closed headphones you could take a look at are the DT770 2005 consumer edition and the AKG K 271/272.

Don't forget the Ultrasones. HFI 580 and HFI 780.

Oh the D1001 is a great little headphone

For your types of music, look into the HFI-780's and 680's or DT440 for non amping. The D2000 would go well with an Amp imo.

Good thing you brought that up, and my apologies for not looking at that.
Skip the DT150 (would be too slow) and the K271/272 (too boring, not enough bass).
That leaves the DT770 2005 edition (good PRaT, lots of detail and treble energy, punchy bass) and the GMP 250 (good PRat, big bass, slightly treble roll-off)

DT990 is open, DT770 is closed.
There are often confusing discussions about the DT770, because of the different models, so compairing can be complicated.

I think the DT770 2005 edition is more or less a closed version of the DT880. Both are relative bright cans.

DT990 has more bass than DT770 2005 edition.

Between the DT770 Pro and the DT990, I think the latter is better.
But 'better' is very subjective.

BTW if you don't have an amp, don't consider the DT770 Pro and DT990. That's why the HFI-580/HFI-780 should be a better option; they are good portable phones and are more easy to drive.

And yes, the Ultrasones are great for the type of music you listen to.

I've been looking on a couple other sites and they're all either too expensive or sold out.

So, here is where you come in. I need the 1-step down headphones from the Denon AH-D2000...somewhere in high $100s..so basically $150-205 range.

I listen to a lot of music and do a lot of gaming.
I listen to a lot of electronica, techno, breakcore, hardstyle, almost any type of sound BUT country and rap.. I do listen to hip-hop and rnb sometimes. I listen to A LOT of DnB, amen breaks, all that stuff.

Please, head-fi, help me out.

Get yourself some Grado SR225is, or SR225s. You'll love them - very similar to the AD2000s... and... you can buy them for about $160 from the right source. They're great... and... they'll be much easier to sell... if... you later decide to sell them.

Man, this is so hard for me. Everyone has a different opinion.

@nullstring:

I don't think they're discontinued but buy.com said something about the manufacturer not sending them anymore.
I really hope they're not discontinued because I might even wait until I can get my hands on them..OR..I will probably buy a pair of headphones, use them until I can get my hands on the D2000s and the previous.

Welcome to Head-Fi and sorry for your wallet

FWIW: why not buy a used D2000 at the FS forum? You can always send a PM to the seller, even if you have no 50 posts.
