Can someone tell me what the top of the line Stax can/amp setup was around 2001? I heard one at a high end shop but couldn't afford it back then and now i'm thinking of going for it.

That would have been SR-007 with a SRM-007t amp. The headphones could have been 4070 because they were released that year.

Thanks guys. If the 4070s are the closed back e'stats then it wasn't those. I don't think it was the Omegas either because if I remember the driver pads were rectangular. The years may have been 1999-2002.

If rectangular, then we are talking sr-404 headphones, which in the system would be paired with 006t amplifier. Right now you could go for 007tII and sr-404 if you want to hit Stax top of the line as far as the amp goes.

It could have been the 4040 system which consisted of the SR-404 and the SRM-006t amp but t could have been any of the many Lambda models.

Well yes, also under-supplied shops are nutty too.

No, since that part of Stax failed at the time, so Omega was not in production (i.e. not even part of the line), and frankly Orpheus has other problems as far as being a Stax goes >.<

When I went to LAOX in Akihabara in 2001, the big display setup had all the amps through the SRM-007t, but no Omega IIs on display. They had 202, 303, and 404 Lambdas, and you could switch them through a number of amps, including the bigger and smaller solid state amps, and both the 006t and 007t. I ended up taking home the Basic Set (2020, with 202s and small amp) for around 300 USD. It was a thrilling visit, though, for this long-time e-stat coveter! When I got back, I searched on my 2020s, and the lowest US price I found was around 800.

Might be, but most probably not.
$1 that he listened to a pair of SR-404's. Which the salesperson advertised as "Stax' top of the line".
