The ‘dark silver’ D50 is indeed not intended as a revision. Stax did not even bother to inform their distributors and resellers that they had changed the color (and made small design adjustments).
Believe your original inquiry may have finally set things right. :)

Nice catch, but I believe this is a Stax-owned website. So far I've only seen a couple of online resellers with updated pictures and descriptions, and it seems they got the info from this forum, not from Stax.

Even the reseller who sold me the ‘dark grey’ unit hasn't updated their website yet (it still shows a silver unit and uses the word ‘silver’ in the description), although they told me months ago that they would do so (presumably they never got the new pictures from Stax, but they could at least change the wording…). And two other resellers I've contacted lately both insisted that all D50s were the same color, thus declining to tell me what color the unit they had in stock was!

The Stax International website (also owned by Stax) was updated in early 2023 (just the pictures—no mention of the color anywhere). It's ‘nice’ to see the Stax Headphones website finally getting updated two years later (albeit with the bizarre claim that this is a ‘2025 edition’)… However, the pictures show the same ‘Frankenstein’ unit as the Stax International website, with a dark grey hood but silver elements on the front (input switch and frames around the meter and volume knob). This may have been a prototype, but no such unit has ever been seen elsewhere as far as I can tell.

While the Stax International website does not name the new(ish) color, Stax Headphones calls it ‘dark grey’ and not ‘dark silver’. Someone at Stax must have finally realized that ‘silver’ is never ‘dark’. Of course, the reseller who sold me the ‘dark silver’ unit after confirming that it was ‘silver’ used this as an argument to deny a full refund (they never said it was ‘light’ silver…). Support at Stax International told me they would step in to find a better outcome for me, but they never got back to me after that. Oh well…

While any said item may be the centre of "our" attention it's most likely on the lower list of priorities for the vendor, and while we like our Stax they're not the most popular or biggest seller.
