Stax SR-009 Channel Imbalance Trouble / Driver Problem?

The only downside to PriceJapan is shipping cost and delays IF you end up needing to send them back.  Speaking from experience they were still covered with a full warranty and a detailed correspondence exchange was required and carried out between myself and STAX during the trouble shooting process.

The headphones I received from PJ were clearly new and untouched.  I did wait a while for them as PJ doesn't have stock.  If your local dealer has stock you can avoid the wait by paying more, but if they don't have stock you'll have the same wait.

Channel imbalance started after about a week of listening.  It was obvious and was easily proven using several amps and headphones for comparison.  I sent them back and PJ did a fine job of handling the return.  STAX reported that they did not find an imbalance when they were returned so we exchanged some information about my experience.  STAX conducted more testing and their engineer replied with more information on his findings.  The headphones were shipped back, turn around was a couple of weeks.  For the record, I'm still well ahead cost wise on my purchase even with the additional shipping cost.  I could ship them again and still be ahead.  The additional waiting time cannot be recovered.

So far the headphones have performed perfectly since they were returned.  The imbalance issue is a STAX problem not a PJ problem.  I could have easily had the same problem with a headphone purchased from a STAX distributer.  I believe that if STAX had a definite way to address the issue they would, but apparently they do not, yet.  Why wouldn't they? I find it hard to believe that they are not still seeking a solution.

Clearly there is still some issue with the 009 that can lead to imbalance.  This is disappointing in a high end offering.  While I was not happy with the situation, STAX and PJ customer service was good.  I agree with a previous poster that while the issue continues, it is not widespread like it was when the headphones were initially released.

Since there have been recent reports of headphone received that developed the imbalance there certainly is the potential that if you decide to purchase you could encounter the same issue. STAX has not provided any evidence to the contrary.  You should take that into consideration when you are considering purchasing.

Everyones decision to purchase anything is highly personal, and based on many factors including different levels of acceptable risk.  In spite of my experience, even with hindsight, I wouldn't hesitate to make the same purchase again from PJ.  Your decision is yours to make and may be different.

I believe we don't post this information here to create a panic or damage a sellers reputation.  We do it to kill the resale value of our headphones! Kidding... We do it to keep our community informed so they can make smart decisions for themselves.  We do it with a hope that it will create some pressure on a manufacturer to eliminate the issue, especially in a high end offering.

The 009 is a great addition to my collection and I look forward to enjoying them for years to come.

I'll also consider buying other products from PJ, especially considering the current status of the Yen.  It's wonderful that we enjoy access to a world market.

So, what did thy say the second time? Did they just return your pair?

At my request they ran the headphones for several days to see if it would develop after a more extended time.  The engineer simply responded with a summary of the additional testing they conducted and how he validated that there was no imbalance.  They were returned with no "repair".

I've considered the conspiricy theory that they have actually done "something" but don't want to say so for fear of a bad reputation, but I think that may be a little far fetched.

I think Spritzer's theory that something is being effected in shipping or by environmental conditions is as good as any at this point.  Hopefully in time the real root cause is uncovered.

So... By extension if you have channel imbalance just box up your 009's and post them back to youself?

Has anyone thought to put their 009's in the freezer to replicate the temperature of a cargo section of a plane at high altitude?

Who knows? Maybe they don't like postal workers?

My 009s seems to have develped a fault in the right channel :-(
Some initial distortion and now is almost dead. There's some noise but it's more like a radio. The left is fine.
I've switched the left and right input channel, but the problem is still on the right.

Do you have another amp to test or another set of headphones to run off that amp to ensure it's not a channel fault in the amp?  Those symptoms, as described could be a tube failure or other issue.

When I had the SR-007's, I once had a break up in sound from the right side. The cause was the cable because when I touched the cable part that was just below the right ear piece, the sound was stopping and starting.
All I did was take the SR-007's to my local audio shop and they sent them off to to be repaired. The place that did the repairs just fitted a new cable.
I've had my 009's for almost two years without a problem.

My dealer has already sent me a 252 to try the 009s with. Really hope the problem is the energiser, and the dealer seems to share your opinion.
Definitely not the right moment to stay without music as I'm having a week off :-(

Hi David, i thought about the cable, and tried to play a bit with it, but doesn't make any difference :-(

With any luck it turns out to be something small in the amp instead of driver issues.  Hoping it works out for you.

this problem seem to be similar to my old 009.
it got worse the longer (between 2-4 hours) its been used.
leaving the 009 untouched for some days seem to heal the headphone a little bit.
but just for some time.
after i start using the headphone again, the same problem occurred.

if you plan to send it in for repair, it is important to tell them to test it for more than 2 hours!
for the first send-in they haven't found any fault. after i described the faulty behavior exactly, they send me a new one.
since than, everything works perfect.

I'm pleased to confirm your guess was right! The problem is the energiser, no issue with the 252! Which actually doesn't sound all that bad if I'm honest. The 009 are more than enjoyable even driven by this little cheap thing
