Does anyone know if it's possible to install the original SR-007 drivers in the SR-007MK2?

If so, I would like to know:

  1. Can STAX do this upon request?
  2. How much does it cost?
  3. What is the waiting period?
  4. And most importantly, does it sound the same as the original SR-007?

@spritzer I believe you may have tried doing this yourself. Any info is appreciated!

AFAIK Stax will replace mk 1 drivers with mk 2, but I highly doubt they'd be willing to do a transplant.

If you want the nitty-gritty it'd be best to message Birgir.

Why do you want to put the MK1 drivers in MK2 housing?

Because I like the look of the black SR-007MK2 much more and the original SR-007 is supposed to sound much better.

Unfortunately, the MK1 drivers are too large, and therefore impossible to fit.

Have you actually tried to fit them into the MK2's housing?  As far as I can remember, the measurements of the 2 are almost the same.

Birgir did, and told me this:

I've done this conversion though and it won't work, the Mk1 drivers are slightly larger than the Mk2 units and you can't get it all to fit together.  It's a matter of only a few millimeters but that's enough.

Most people who have heard both greatly prefer the original SR-007. Some even think the MK2 sounds awful in comparison.

So you prefer the sound of the MK2? How so?

By fart, are you referring to the different ear pads? Some people also use the MK2 pads with the MK1.

I didn't mean that I preferred any of them, because I didn't get to A/B test them at the same time.  MK2 sounded very nice to my ears though.

The fart that I mention is the famous "fart" like sound from the drivers of SR007 MK1.  Very often you can hear it when you're wearing the headphones and suddenly turning your head or when you're chewing something.

I plan on getting the SR-009, SR-007, and SR-007MK2 anyway, so no worries.

Ah, yeah, I'd heard of that. Don't the ear pads play a part in it, though? Or maybe there are two different "STAX farts" that people talk about.

The "farting" isn't as bad on MK2 and 009.  I think it has to do with the diaphragm material and the way the driver is put together.

Regarding the 007mk'1 ear pads, the thing I didn't like when I had a pair of 007mk1's, was the ear pads revolving, but because of the 009's being fixed I like them a lot. I still get the so called Stax fart from my 009's, but only when I turn my head quickly.

Once I got the 007mk1's ear pads in the right position I found those earspeakers were comfortable, but not as comfortable as the 009's, plus with the 009's I'm not messing about with the ear pads.
