Stax SR-001 Appreciation Thread

Mar 1, 2006 at 7:06 AM Post #31 of 84
I recently got a 003 cable to swap with the SR001 headset from http://www.eifl.co.jp/index/export/export2.htm in Japan. It was a bit expensive though at $50.00 shipped. Audiocubes said that they could not get this item although they have the 001 cable for about $30.00.

I also disagree that the little Stax amp is crappy. I know one ex-headfier who modified a cable so that the amp could be used to drive lambdas with an upgraded power supply. It has a lot more oomph with a decent external power supply.

Also this set-up can change its sound quite dramatically with the right mini-mini interconnect.

Call me strange (Hello Strange), but one of the reasons why the 001 system may sound musical is the treble roll-off.

I'm bit of a vinyl fan and have always found CD listening a bit tiring (albeit at the cheaper end of things) largely because the sound to my ears can be a bit tizzy and brash..

A treble roll-off and the lovely electrostatic midband (I have a couple of pairs of electrostatic speakers with this characteristic) would help this slightly, making the sound more musical at the cost of being analytical.

BTW, use the 2500mw/h rechargables. They last ages (longer that I can be bothered to measure so far - 7/8 hours?)

Yes, this is what I meant. I believe that the amp is the clear bottleneck in the system.

I'll have to get some 003's or a 003 cord and hear what they can do when properly driven.

I have been running the 003's with a Stax 717, the newest and biggest of their transistor amps and it seems to extend the high frequency response somewhat. Of lesser note is a somewhat wider soundstage than with the 001 using the portable amp, and somewhat more dynamics. Mostly, though I did not feel they improved as much as the full-siize Stax 404 did when I went from the SRM-3 amp to the 717 with them.

Well, I just sent in my order for the 003's at AudioCubes. Couldn't wait any longer. I'll be playing these through the 313 until KG get's his new portable amp up and out. If that seems like it'll take too long I might get a 001 cable and Stax portable.

Aaaaaah, now the waiting begins

Hehe, yes the waiting is the hardest part. I still won't have a Stax portable rig just yet but in time....

I only hope they don't prove to be too uncomfortable, many seem to think these make excellent torture devices so I'm a little apprehensive about that. I'm sure I can make them work though, even if it means a little DIY on my part.

it is true that they are a little uncomfortable, but IMO it's only for first coupld of times, and nothing to bad. i wear them on the train to and from uni and i'm up to the point where i don't even notice the discomfort anymore. it's just all bliss

They definitely have a comfort acclamation time (like my bike seat every spring). After that they're fine.

Hopefully I'll find out shortly, they have already shipped and are on their merry journey across the globe. I don't know how long stuff takes to reach the US from AudioCubes, just in time for the weekend when I won't be able to use them with my luck.

Oh well, patience is a virtue... or so they tell me

I've never seen any of these worn before so I thought you'd all like to see how they look in place, happy me!

I tried the headband but it was hopeless so I opted for the IEM look. Really quite comfy considering the bad press these get comfort-wise and smaller than I was expecting. They look very nice too in a lumpy, dorky Stax kinda way. Sadly I have to wait until Monday to run them as my amp is at work

Still, at least they are here now

I tried to use them without the headband but they keep falling out of my ear.

I have to use the headband. I feel it provides a better seal, too.

The best money I have spent in this hobby and I get the feeling that the SR-001 are in some way, the best kept secret in head-fi audio.
It is mostly about Shure, Etymotics, Sony et all what you read here and the SR-001 seems to be neglected.
I often find myself thinking: People! You are going the wrong way!
You want to spend your hard earned cash wisely? Best bang for your bucks? (I believe is the phrase)
Get the SR-001.
You DO get what you have paid for, and even more I dare to say.
Just make sure your source is up to it.

I use these with a portable DAT and the synergy is awesome, up till 2 weeks ago I used a EarCandy mini>mini cause I do think that the mini>mini used should and must be the best quality possible as it is the only 'vain' in the setup. I lost my EarCandy in a trade so now I must wait for my ordered Black Diamond to arrive.

Try to listen to them without the headband, it gave me a better seal and a fuller tighter image. And the plugs are so light weighted that when you get used to them you don't even realise you have them plugged in!

you aint kidding. had never heard of these. i'm intrigued!!
