While I agree that the Grado's aren't a very portable phone (they work best at home, or in a quiet environment like an office), I find the design and size not to be a problem. They look retro, yet they don't stand out THAT much. Size isn't the issue for portability, but rather the problem is how it can't be folded up and stored easily.
The thick cord is nice sometimes, as it gives a sturdier feeling than leads me to believe that it's less likely to break. This might not be true, but compared to the K81Djs, the cable looks 10x as strong.
As for the original posters question, I like the sound coming from it... very different from the K81s, but still very enjoyable.
