Well today I popped my Grado cherry by recieving a pair of SR225's in the mail. All I can say is WOW!!!! I think I have found what I have been searching for even above and beyond my HD580's. It is like they took everything I wanted tweaked in my 580's and made it right. I was always afraid to try Grado's because of there so called harshness you always hear about, but that is deffinately not the case. All of this and I am only driving them straight from my 5.5g iPod. Well I got to go off and listen for awhile.

You won't be going back to your 580's anymore. It looks like there may be some 580's for sale soon.

OK I am on hour 4 with them and they have not left my head. It is like I am hearing my music all over again for the first time.

Grats! 4 hours already? Ears hurting yet? Remember to bend the headband so they are not clamping your ears.

That's not what I think when I heard the 225. I used to own the 580 as well, then tested the grados at the store and not hearing any improvement. It is bright though, so I guess it depends on the music that you like. 580 is bass-emphasized. So, I went for the more balance presentation, beyer880. still curious about 701 though.

Sure the SR225's are awesome, I've had mine for maybe 13 years, but don't sell the HD580's short especially if you haven't listened to them amped. I think these two cans complement one another beautifully and it's nice to be able to switch back and forth depending on what type of music you're listening to. Having said all that, congrats on the new Grado's, rock on!

Oh I am not selling the 580's short. That is why I am going to keep them because when I get past the crap fest I am now with my wife I can rebuild my gear again. That is probably when the 580's will shine again. Until then at least I have the 225's that sound pretty damn good unamped. I have a strong feeling they will benfit from a amp as well.

The 225s and 580s are both the sweet spots from their respective mfgs. They both scale very well, and respond to good amps and sources.
