I am testing my new SR-71A amp side-by-side with my old PA2V2 amp using the same source and Sennheiser HD-580 headphones.  I am really surprised to hear virtually no difference between the two amps.  Am I deaf?

Nope. Most amps do and should sound pretty much the same - unless they are doing something wrong.

I am one of those who likes many of the amps that Ray has made and sold. Unfortunately the SR71A is not one of them, however the original SR71, The Hornet, the P51 are among the best sounding portables I have listened to.

Very much different.
 
And try to drive the HD650 with a PA2v2 and then try the SR-71A. The PA2v2 will fail to properly drive them where the SR-71A will deliver plenty of power...as far as portable amps go. I have owned Grado 325i, HD 650, PA2v2 & SR-71A.
 
2- AA batteries cannot compete with 2- 9 volt.

The SR-71A outperforms the PA2V2 only at extreme high volumes (past 9:00) - and since I dont plan on listening at those dangerous levels, I consider there to be virtually no difference.

I am using the line-out on my HiMD Sony Mindisc player which is playing lossless vinyl recordings.  You cant get much better than that with a portable device.

Vinyl, what's vinyl? lol. Yeah, I like vinyl. Well don't know what to say except that I can hear difference between a number of amps but this is a very individual sport. :^)

so in other words, headphones that are very hard to drive will actually see a noticeable difference
