So I'm trying to find out which headphone is the fastest- K701s, HD-650s, or the DT880/990s. I know....there are many others, but these appear to be the norm for most people, so I'd just like some thoughts on it. (waits for stax comments....)

Speed? In the same sentence as K701, HD650, and DT880? Sorry, but just try again.

All three are pretty slow compared to headphones like the AD2000, W5000, SA5000, Qualia 010, and Stax OII MKII. High-end AT and Sony headphones run rings around the other vendors when it comes to nothing but pure speed.

But if you're pitting the K701, HD650, and DT880 against each other only, the K701 is fastest of the three.

definitely not the HD650's :p I'd say

K701 > DT-880 -> DT-990 -> HD650

from fastest to slowest.

Just get the Sony MDR-SA5000.

Of the three, I'd put the K-701 first. However, it's my least favorite of the three. And the HD-650 steps quickly with the right amp.

From my humble opinion I agree to previous comments that compared to others these three are not 'fast'. Again within the three I would chose for the 701 with a decent recable. I find that the 701 is most accurate in terms of timing (which I guess you mean by fast) and pace.
I find Senn's and Beyers in general very musical but less in timing and pace.

Hans.

Of those three I would say the K701...

I have all 3 phones - my opinion is the K701s, followed by the DT880s.

They are pretty fast and tight, though they do get confused in most intense parts and lose small details.

SA5000, speed is the name of the game in this headphone.
