Hi guys. I need a pair of decent, punchy speakers for the amplifier that is hooked up to my DAC. It appears the ones that have sounded great and served me for more than 5 years have developed some problems. are there any pairs reasonably priced that I could pick up for around $400? Reccomended brands even? I don't know where to start. Clear midrange is a priority over bass.

there are many great bookshelf / monitor type speakers for $400ish or less.  You may want to check out the speaker forums at AVS to see what people are recommending: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=89

I can highly recommend the Energy RC-10's (which I own) on sale on clearance for $299 shipped at VAnn's: http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/542469405/energy-rc10?s_c=site_search

You can also get PSB Image B6 for $399: http://www.saturdayaudio.com/

Axiom M3 is another great speaker in your budget range: http://axiomaudio.com/m3.html

What's wrong with your speakers? Most of them can be fixed.

There are plenty of options for $400. Do you want bookshelves or floorstanders? Active or passive?

Yeah more detail on the problem with the speakers can definitely help, especially if you liked them, why not try and fix them.

IF you've decided to switch speakers though, more info on what  you are looking for will certainly help recommendations. Tell us what "the" amplifier is that you are using. What room are you using it in. How are you likely to set up the speakers, etc.
