Hi there, Hopefully one of you knowledgeable people can help me put.

I'm repairing a Sony TA-FA3ES and have discovered some Mosfets that aren't working as they should. The component numbers is 2SJ201-Y & 2SK1530-Y

Sadly they are out of production and it seems only second hand are available at quite high prices. Is there a decent alternative to the mentioned Mosfet that can just be soldered straight in, no issues?

Many thanks

Hi Dantonaudio,

Those Toshiba parts are truly difficult to find these days. Hopefully these are a few things to help you along.

Get some coffee or tea and read the datasheets for those parts. From what I just read, the "Y" and "O" parts for the 2SJ201 are different, so getting a better understanding of how the parts operate, and under what circumstances, will help a lot.

Do you know for sure that the FETs are not working as they should? If they are suspect, getting them tested in and out of circuit will help you know for sure. Plus, no sense in replacing that part if the problem is somewhere else in that Sony.

There are some tests you can perform with a DMM to get a decent read on these parts:
https://forum.digikey.com/t/how-to-test-a-mosfet/1985?utm_adgroup=Semiconductor+Modules&utm_term=
and
https://www.wellpcb.com/testing-a-mosfet.html

If the parts are truly toast and you're inside the TA-FA3ES anyway, make sure that another part has not failed and caused the FETs to get overheated or fail.

If you want to replace these problem parts, I'd start here:
https://alltransistors.com/
The site is overwhelming at first, but just search for your part and if there are alternatives you'll see links to them. You may have to settle for different values for replacement parts, so knowing the original specs will be necessary. Regular web searches may give you a few different options as far as the original datasheets, too.
(And the service manual for the TA-FA3ES would also help!)

You might try searching for these parts online, of course. Octopart.com is pretty good at showing a list of verified and unverified vendors. Of course, be wary of unverified vendors.

Finally, and this might be the most helpful, there is a thread out on diyaudio about some parts very similar to yours. Perhaps the OP would be of help.

Best of luck!

You are welcome. I admit: it is a lot to digest. Unfortunately for us builders, modders and repairers, parts get deleted from product lines and replaced. But I can say that you will likely find a (replacement) part that ticks most of the boxes. When you get to using the alltransistors.com site you will (hopefully) find the Transistor Equivalent Substitute link for the part you are searching for. Below that you will get a table of possible substitutes. From there, you can sort the table depending on the part parameters. For instance, you'll want a Vds of the same or higher than your part, Similar readings for Vgs, etc. Also keep an eye on the Id and the Rds. It's like trying to fashion a puzzle piece which has some similar corners and turns to it. But it can be done! I had to swap out some parts recently and gave myself a good schooling on all of this and...the replacement part is currently working fine.
