With just my 50$ ish iem with some EQ, I'm thoroughly enjoy it. I'll join rhyme-r once i save enough money 😙 i was looking for this type of sound for the longest time. This is the one i wanted 😁
Oh…!

You’ve found your color!

So 40:60 maybe your taste then.

I can see you wouldn’t find HEXA too entertaining for that case, HEXA is 60:40 ish at stock tuning.

Hope you join soon!
And since it’s not one size fit all, some tried SR8 may not find it fit to their taste, and there maybe second hand sales someday.

Well, Penon told them to retune their stuff so that's how it goes. :)

Are the drivers really all the same and even Empire Ears EST?
Only the driver config, not drivers per say. It's also differences in venting as I understand. One of them have probably just tried to follow the others target when tuning the set.

A measurement also never show everything, it is just a 2D plot. To understand a set you need to listen.

DTE500 sounds better. And I love my EST50.
DTE500 has better treble and the bass is cleaner. Better resolution too.

Yeah, this matches up with my memory of the EST50... I recall it being a bit more smeared in the mids and treble, detail-wise. There was no way it was as resolving as the DTE500, which is truly crystalline in its presentation. I saw some refer to it on the warm side, but I don't think so (the DTE500). To me it has a bit of bite, and is borderline too harsh sometimes in upper mids / lower treble. But it's tolerable in that area, thankfully. Hopefully it'll calm down some with more hours on the set.

Our friend tgx measured his EST set burn in on Jewel, I feel EST drivers are actually subject to burn-in to my experience.

My DTE500 is on 50 hours mark and treble performance is just getting better and better👍

I look forward to a 3-way shootout when the new Penon Anniversary EST IEM is released.

Any wonder about the graph of SR8? After doing some math i think i kinda match the graph of SR8 on normal squiglly line
Here official graph of SR5
Here's Akros graph of SR5

Here official graph of SR8

And here's my SR8 graph after some serious calculation

Yes the graph doesn't look good but sound wise, crazy
I realize the Official graph is a little bit ringing. So i did some revaluation and after some easy math. This maybe the final graph ?!?
graph - 2023-04-26T151424.170.png

Edit: Yeah with this graph i somewhat understand why you said this sound like QDC tho 😁 still like it. This graph based on Akros SR5 graph with some math, so if Akros got the SR8, this might be the graph you'll see?!?

So my SoundRhyme SR5 arrived yesterday morning. As is usual for any DD I like to give a few hours burn-in, just to loosen it up. So my intention was to give about 10 hours and then listen, with a bit of cable and tip rolling, with my Qudelix 5k. "The best laid plans of mice and men", as we say in the UK. Things don't always work out as expected. After about 5 hours I decided to listen to a few tracks, LDAC from the 5k. Arghhh. So much glare from the upper-mids that I thought there was something wrong with them. Had I bought a 'Lemon'? Painful to listen. Glare....What the F! Even the good EQ of the Qudelix 5k did not help much. Decided to leave them burning in some more until I went to bed. Disappointment coursing through my music glands, my expectations of what would happen later had nosedived.
So later. Got into bed. Quickly listened through the Qudelix 5k.....GLARE! Decided to use my Shanling M3X, with the strange NiceHCK Black Cat 'brass' cable (Copper, Zinc), and a pair of 15mm XL tips I had from Penon. Wow!! No glare at all. Where had it gone? I almost wanted it back. How could it just disappear? Suddenly the SoundRhyme SR5 was sounding fantastic. Bass through XL 15mm tips is elevated because of space in the tip dome to resonate, also the deep fit. It wasn't that, tonally or timbre wise these were better than other sets....it was the 'spacials'. Imaging is at another level, stage width and depth...wide. 'Slabo Day' live, Snowy White, Enjoy the Silence live in Berlin, Depeche Mode, placement of the different parts of the crowd. On 'Black Magic Woman', Santana, From 'Ultimate Santana', depth and height of imaging. What a ****ing relief.
Why a total mess from my Qudelix? Strange that the SR5 was virtually un-listenable, then like a 'Frog turning into a Prince', a metamorphosis.....beautiful.

Change your cable to a 3.5 termination and try again with the Q5K, or just use an Apple dongle like me. I used to connect the Q5K with a 2.5 termination in Bluetooth mode with my phone and couldn't hear anything due to a lot of noise. The SR5 is as sensitive as the Andromeda, so you can hear sound even at 1/100 volume level.

The imaging on the SR5 is on another level, if you use the right tips. Especially very large tips enhance the imaging. Are these big Penon tips still out for sale?

I've got 2 different types of Penon 15mm tips. Ones that came with the Penon Fan OG, of which Penon sent me some more after I enquired about them. The others are a tip that I think are on sale at Penon now, The Penon Orange 15mm tips. They are bright orange and have a silicone that has some moderate friction and stay in my big ear-holes well. They do increase the bass substantially and as you say create an increased stage. The imaging on the SR5 is amazing in its accuracy of location. You can email Penon about them as Penon had advertised the fact they were preparing to sell them, on posts on the IMR thread

They definitely have them as they sent me a 15mm pair to test, with my Penon serial.

If you email or PM them Penon will tell you about them.

How deep do you have to insert those orange tips? I'm using Dunu S&S L size which don't need deep insertion at all and the shells of the SR5 are still too big which make them somewhat uncomfortable. :/ Moondrop Variations are more comfortable.

I reckon you need to do what is comfortable to you. We are all so different. I have big ear-holes, for better or worse and don't feel much discomfort from large ear-tips, or getting the tips in deep. I think the only benefit of 15mm XL tips is some extra bass reverb and maybe I miss out on the treble details because of that.

So I've been listening all morning and this afternoon to the SR5 from my Tempotec V6 DAP 4.4mm. With some brain burn in and some driver burn in, I am now really enjoying the SR5. No more glare, in fact quite smooth. Very occasionally a harsh note, but that is being pedantic. I like to judge by personal enjoyment factors and these are up there. Indian Classical Music is top from these, great separation and imaging, great Indian Violins. Rock and Blues sound good. Vocals excellent. I will listen to some classical. Mids shine. My set have good sub-bass but possibly could do with a minutia of extra mid-bass. The overall sound is cohesive and well tuned. I will definitely have these in my IEM rotation. These, SoundRhyme SR5's, the Penon Serial, the IMR Bass Cannon 2023, and possibly even the Simgot EA500 which defies it's price. I've never owned a true TOTL, I'd rather give the money to a good cause, so these here are in my ballcourt.
