I'm having a debate with a friend over quality of headphones between the Sony MDR-V600's and the Grado sr-60's. Anybody have a take on this?

Based on my experience with both the Sony MDR-V600's and the Grado SR-60's, I can't directly compare the two - they're both completely different classes of headphones. But soundwise the Sony MDR-V600's are basically just cheap $20 closed headphones masquerading as $100 headphones - in other words, downright craptacular for such a high price.

You're not the one arguing for the V600, by any chance?

Im actually going for the Grado's. my friend says he's been researching the crap out of this, and found that the sony's are widely used in the professional world as well. any truth to that?

Aye, that's true enough (from hearsay). Mostly DJs use it--mostly because it's got all these swivel and fold capability, plus insane power handling--so they can use them as loudspeakers perhaps

--but also because the hyped midbass is good for beatmatching (or so people think). But it's no good for monitoring or just listening to music, when you need an accurate frequency response.

The V6 is widely used as monitoring headphone though--that's a completely different beast.

The V6's are considered pretty awesome value for its money here at Head-Fi too. The 7506 less so--it's pretty much agreed that they're the same as V6's with a gold hp jack and different letters stamped on the earcups, although this reviewer preferred the 7506.

The Grados are also highly regarded...

Thanks for posting. It kinda looks like it comes down to what you want with closed or open headphones. Me, I've never really dug the whole closed thing. Thanks again!
