It cannot be removed. It is not any hassle anyway. I have had 3 Sony players bought in Europe and never had a problem with volume not being enough for normal listening.
I tried that and it didn't work which lead me to selling it. Plus I found the Euro A867 to sound brighter in the midrange up compared to my US A865 and Southeast Asia (SA) A867. The US A865 & SA A867 have identical sound signature & loudness. I also found that the US A865 share much of the US Z1060's sound signature.

May very well be. Where did you obtain your A865 from? I know folks are selling A866 w/ 32GB in Hong Kong for around $320 on ebay. Not a bad price for a non-volume cap version with 32 GB of memory.
I used this on an old S Series player I had. This doesn't work on the touchscreen A867. Any info would be appreciated.
*Update* - Currently this menu access hack does not seem to be working for the newer generation of Walkmans and I am unaware of any method to access the menu in the touchscreen A860 either. If anyone has any service manuals for the newer Walkmans please email me using the contact area. Thanks

Is your A walkman European or US version? According to the sound signature, your A is likely US version as it sounds nearly the same as the Z walkman. I found the A867 Euro version to have more treble emphasis from upper mindrange onward compared to the Japanese & US A series walkman.
I also want to add that the EU A series is 6-7 volume level lower than that of the US's A-walkman.
I am convinced that the EU volume capping not only reduces the volume but also the SQ as well. My old Sony A729 (which came out before the EU volume capping law) sounds more fuller and richer with better bass and soundstage than my new EU capped A845 and A865. On my old A729 I can comfortably listen to music at 10 on the volume where on the newer EU Sony DAPs (A845 and A865) I have to listen to music between 18 and 25 and the newer EU Sony DAPs lack bass and warmth.
Listening to Radiohead's "In Rainbows" on my A867 with no EQ, Dynamic Normalizer and other effects disabled, and 15/30 is pretty loud on my Audio Technica ATH-WS55 headphones. So the EU cap isn't as extreme as I expected it to be.
A very nice sounding player, I think.....but it's been too long since I had a USA-spec player to be able to remember if there was a different sound or not....and I didn't have these headphones back then either. Love how the touchscreen can be disabled while you still have buttons to control it.

Why? Have you ever compared a Sony A729 with a newer EU capped Sony DAP? Have you?
I bet if you were to try out an older Pre-EU capped Sony DAP like the A729/A829 you will find that the sound is alot more richer and fuller than the newer EU capped Sony DAPs.
