For that money you could buy yourself a cd / mp3 player, an external dac and a xp7 and you'd still have 1000$ left for headphones.

What is Sony thinking

There's no reason to think this MDP has exceptionally good sound, certainly no better than the E720, and maybe not as good. It's more of a status symbol.

maybe the casing is partially made from moon rocks

What is Sony thinking these days!

For 2K more, I would rather get a pair of R10s!

Stepping back a bit, I'm sure casual visitors to headfi would also be stunned that anyone is willing to spend 3-4K for a pair of headphones.

Not only that, the material underneath looks plastically - it could very well be magnesium, but I don't remember that something like that remote plug would look like that mirrored in the magnesium/silver plastic. One thing is for sure though. In many areas they have chosen plated metal, like it was seen on the IMP-400. It looks nice, but not on a $1900 player

Atleast they could have made it solid aluminium or magnesium and drill and work the case out from that - see that would look nice, and hard work would have been put into it.
Yes - why not HiMD ? This should be the top-of-the-line product - but not with their own tech ?

BTW. Just think if you had one... I wouldn't wear a $2k player on the street and wave it around - so why make it portable ?

Wrong! SBG was referring to players, not recorders. Indeed, several recorders had dedicated line outs, 1/2/30/35/50/37/etc. The only player to feature a dedicated line out was the first player, the 2P, which was both optical and line.

Sony had a golden opportunity here, they could have made this player their HiMD statement player, like the SCD-1 was the statement SACD player. Instead they chose the old MD format for this player. What a waste.

Yeah, but the thing I keep noticing is that the Qualia line is like a luxury line whereas the ES is the quality line and the regular stuff is the performance line (works+cheap).

the whole point of this qualia BS is to get people talking about Sony again... and hey, look, it works

i guess they subscribe to the "any press is good press" thing.
