To be honest, I've never heard any artifacting with 256kb on my HiMDs. I rarely heard some with 292kb (SP). I mainly use 352 for classical or jazz since I seem to hear more fullness in the SQ with 352. Is it a placebo? Maybe it is, but I've got plenty of blanks, so I don't mind "wasting" the space.

they are theoretically near enough the same, and you shouldn't be able to tell the difference,

the only reason i use 256 is that you can get 8hrs on to a 1gig hi-md disc with 352 it would be a lot less, plus i cant tell the difference

if you can understand all the mambo jumbo.

anyway, it is hard to discern between a realtime recorded MD and a CD, but many people can distinguish a 256 atrac3plus/mp3 from a CD, so go figure.

Sorry while I like HiMD and HiSP that chart is Bull. SP 292 is light years better than 64kps. If its got that wrong then the rest is Bull.

While I can hear a slight difference between 352 and HiSP I think HiSP is a good enough compromise for portable use. Perhaps if I'd better phones and more particular about my classics I'd go with 352.

Well SQ is subjective anyway....but of course Sony PR will big up Atrac. Hardly going to do anything but are they?

However compressed formats is the only way given the trade off between SQ and storage space until the year 2120 when we can fit 200gb on a pin head

Technically speaking, Atrac is not CD quality. Subjectively...well each to their own but Atrac was not for me.

I think a lot of people (myself included) like ATRAC because it often can sound more fun than the original CD. Especially so on the non Sony units. That could be because in recent years PCDP's weren't all that impressive.
