I personally feel ANY MD recorder OR player (except for the super cheap E60 or whatever that old blue player from last year's US line-up was) is a great deal at 75.

GO FOR IT!

Generally, the R70 was regarded as a decent unit, tho "quiet" - it played softly compared to other 5 mw MDs, apparently...

Where'd you find it for $75? At that price it's a great deal, best price I've seen was over twice that amount and it was for the original package (no PC hookup stuff). For reviews try www.minidisc.org and look in the hardware browser section. They'll list a bunch of models and give some details, usually there's a link to a review or something if it's a popular model.

Damn, that's an awesome price..

I've owned this particular unit for a year and a half.. I bought mine for around $350 CDN, and I haven't regretted my purchase. And I've never found it to be any quieter than my friend's MZ-R90, which is supposed to have a 5mW per channel headphone jack also. It plays plenty loud when driving either my KSC-50s or my MDR-V6s....

Go for it! You'll kick yourself if you don't.

redshifter: I've got the straight MZ-R70 without pc-interface. To me it sounds almost as good as the Sharps I had before. Battery life could be better, though. But it's a nice little recorder, anyway.

lini,
i just tried the pc interface (usb-->dig. opt.) and recorded some stereolab i had ripped. pretty nice sounding, although not quite as good as my d777 discman. i wonder if there is a way to combine the two 5mw headphones jacks to get one 10ms jack?

redshifter: I don't want to ruin your hopes (especially because it's a good idea!), but are you sure it's 2x 2x 5 mW and not only 2x 5 mW (shared, when 2 phones in use)?

Hehe...hopefully you'll get into MD some more, because if you think the R70 is tiny, wait til you see the R900, 909, or the new Net MD... TINY TINY TINY!

Lini - I am almost positive that the R70 has 5 mw X 2 for EACH headphone jack......the R700's single jack is at 5 mx X 2.....and usually, the outputs have gone down, not up...

lini,
in the specs it lists 2 2x5mw amps. the amp does pretty well, especially with sony's codec punching up the bass and sweetening the sound.
