Hey guys, I recently purchased some Sony MDR-V6s off Amazon, but I have a few concerns. I'm in the UK, and it seems that absolutely no-one other than third party sellers Amazon stocks these headphones, I couldn't find them on the UK Sony Store either. I did some research and they seemed like the best headphones I could buy in my (relatively tight budget). I checked the seller rating, which was high, and the location of the company was apparently America. The order was fulfilled through Amazon so I thought I'd take a chance and purchase a pair. I looked over the counterfeit threads and it seemed that there were some obvious differences in packaging and the actual headphones themselves, however these threads were from 2010/11. The leather pouch had the white sony stamp, and the manual doesn't look like a cheap print and came in sealed packaging.
 
When I got them everything checked out fine, the packaging matched up totally with how it should be. The red felt looked very well cut, the box checked out. However there are a couple of things nagging me about the headphones themselves. One of the For Digital Red stickers placed on the side of the headphones was stickied on at an angle. The stickers both look completely legitimate when compared to the fake stickers I saw online. Also, the underside of the headband worries me slightly. They're supposed to be totally smooth, and the fake ones I looked at were very wrinkled. Mine had a couple of dents and very very slight wrinkling. The dents showed up on the legitimate ones too however. Everything else checks out as it should do.
 
I've attached some pictures. I know I'm probably grasping at straws a little here, but if anyone could help me out it would be appreciated.

There's a great thread located here. The easiest way to tell is by the packaging unless they've changed that up. Judging by the headband picture... it looks legit. The fakes usually have loose and flabby leather headbands unlike something tight and well put together. GL tho.

E: Stickers: Maybe they were returns that someone resold and claimed new. Dunno.

If I couldn't get the Sony V6 and wanted one, I would get the Sony 7506. The 7506 is basically the same thing, except that its magnet is a bit stronger. Some claim the 7506 is a bit brighter. The Sony 7506 is sold in pro audio stores. In the US it is around $10 more than the V6. The 7506 has a gold plated plug and longer warranty than the V6.

If it helps, I got my V6 from the same supplier in the UK and I did go through the checks at the time and came up with the conclusion that mine wasn't a fake. I also suspected because of the threads.
 
The other thing - check the bag and the writing of Sony. That's another giveaway.
 
I guess you may be finding the sound strident so soundwise, you suspect it's a fake? They are bright and some find the sound a little strident.
 
The funny thing is, it's one of the headphones I don't want to get ride of and I don't know why!!

Packaging checks out, as do the headphones themselves. Only the misplaced sticker set of alarm bells. The Headband itself also has some very minor wrinkling on one side but nothing like the fakes I've seen:

The bag checks out, the white stamp is there and the leather is nice. The stickers themselves too look exactly like the real thing.

The counterfeit thread mentions how the counterfeit should sound, muddy and dull. No highs. Maybe that helps.

It would be so funny if sometime a company makes fakes of a headphone that sound much better than the original! Imagine people going out of their way to try to find these specific fakes. It would be too funny.
