Sony MDR MA900 Impressions Thread

A bit off topic, but I am blown away by my new JVC-HAFX850 iems. They out shine my MA900s in most ways and even come close in their spaciousness and soundstage. It blows my mind that such a small headphone can sound so good. On other threads folks are comparing them to a lot of full sized headphones including the HE6, LCD2 and TH900. They are that good.

This sounds impossible (assuming that the MA900  = F1 soundstage).

It looks like the begging of a new FOTM.

Yes, it could be the FOTM, but sometimes the FOTM has some staying power.

PS: Someone I trust on here compared the spaciousness of the JVCs to his K1000s. Personally, I do not think they are quite as open and wide as the K1000, but the sound stage is very natural and moderately wide. The real high point of the JVC's is their tone which just feels so full and creamy. It is like eating chocolate ice cream.

Hello my MA900 community, I was wondering which are the best DAC/Amp I could pair these with? I would like to keep the signature warm, good detail retrieval and would love to open up the soundstage even more. These headphones are 12 Ohms and very sensitive, which means I need to make sure that whatever I end up buying has very low output impedance and has great synergy with it, and there's that resistor thing. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm currently using them unamped through my iPad, my max budget is around $250.

If you want more soundstage, I would check out the amps by iCAN. They have a nice switchable 3D effect that works well with the MA900. They offer a portable for $189 and a desktop for $259. My review of the desktop is here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/654405/ican-amp-review-a-new-amp-that-gives-you-more-more-bass-more-soundstage-and-more-detail

And my review of the portable is here: http://www.head-fi.org/products/ifi-ican-nano-portable-headphone-amp/reviews/10801

My iCAN works great with my F1...and pretty much any headphone I throw at it.

I have to update since this is the MA900 thread that as much as I am enjoying the JVC iems, when I went back to the MA900 today, it sure sounded good. They are both overachievers. I could live with either one as my only headphones.

If a desktop solution is fine, the Shanling PH3000 has wonderful synergy with the MA900.

Yes. I used the Shure 1840 pads. It fits, though it will add even more bass and recess the mids a bit. Despite people's nitpicks about the driver cover touching the ear, the MA900 is sensitive to how far the ears are to the drivers, so adding distance with thicker pads will negatively impact it's stellar mids.

I'm really dying wanting to try MA900.  I've heard all the hype... now I WANT to feel it!

Is anyone here willing to lend me MDR MA900 for like a week or two?
I will lend my MDR 7550 in exchange for the same duration above

You guys can check my feedback.

Also, do Sony MDR MA900 owners here also own MDR 7550 / EX800ST iem?

I'm surprised that the F1 got little attention, and almost no respect, when it was available by forum members.    I'm also surprised that the MA900, if it is as good as I think it might be, is also not getting much love.

This thread seems to have lost some steam lately...why?

I think it's because the MA900's have been discontinued.
