Sony MDR-7520

I'm trying this right now and it's definitely adding more space for my ears to breathe. But the clamping pressure has also increased a bit. But I'll give it a closer listen and compare back and forth between using cotton balls as padding, and without :) Not noticing a big sound difference right away though.

Okay, so after some extensive listening and a bit of comparing back and forth, this 'cotton-mod' does add a slight amount of boominess to the bass, which lessens the SQ a bit. So I guess I can confirm what third_eye said. So in spite of the added comfort the cotton-mod provides, I've removed it and will just live with a little bit of pressure on my left ear. Either way, it's not nearly as bad as all the other headphones I've tested so far :) I just don't like what it does to the sound signature.

And the Shure SRH1540 will probably arrive Thursday, so I'll do some testing over the weekend :)

Really looking forward to this!

Well, I got e-mailed today that I'll probably receive them in week 52, so that's end of December. So it'll be a while before I can do any sort of comparison with the 7520. Not that it's torture to have to listen to the 7520 though  But I might also just end up cancelling that order altogether and just be happy with the 7520 :)

maybe you can compare it to the other hidden gem the Yamaha HPH-MT220.

just saying...

Me too, despite the fact that this can is rare in  europe

Sorry to disappoint guys, but I canceled the order of the 1540. It would take too long for it to arrive here, which means that I would no longer be able to return the 7520 if I decided to keep the 1540 instead (I only need 1 headphone and am not planning on becoming a collector of headphones like some people here :)).

So unless the 1540 pops up somewhere else within the return window of the 7520 (have a 60 day return policy on that headphone), no comparing will happen :)

If you read the comments made by Tyll Hertsens on the Sony MDR-1R I was given the impression that the MDR-!R is prone to overloading at high listening levels the mid-bass and the forward upper-mids became overpowering. Looking at the specs for the Sony MDR-1R it has Driver Unit size of 40 mm,  a Sensitivity of  105 dB/mW and a power Handling Capacity of 1500 mW

My MDR-7520 has a driver size of 50.0mm, a sensitivity of 108dB and a power Handling Capacity of 4,000mW. That is quite a difference and the MDR-7520 has extremely large dynamic power range. In my book that usually means lower distortion and good transit peak response. I believe that may be part of the reason that the MDR-7520 has great clarity and easy to pick out the parts in complex music.

This explains how I was able to make the Sony 1r driver pop from its socket(!), yet without any permanent damage as I lowered it immediately.
I was testing bass levels with an O2 amp and comparing it against my other portables at the time (an Audio tech ws99 and a JVC s500 )..
This was the only headphone I ever owned that did this.

Well, I just thickened the pads with cotton balls ....
it sounds pushed the bass into "boomy" territory...

Try foam(!)

... IMO the 7520 besting the 1R in every way. Or to put it differently, the 1R doesn't even come close :)

I can totally believe this..

I am also looking at the Sony mdr cd900st and hoping to decide between these two so reading the threads..
Any comparisons on both?

Try foam(!)

What kind of foam would you recommend? Styrofoam?

(just kidding)

Ideally I would find a big piece of foam that I could cut out in a ring shape and stuff it inside the earcup.

About to pull the trigger on those, is B&H Photo the best priced option?

BTW, on earpads problem, accidentally hit this Japanese blog doing image search for 7520

Z1000 with Shure HPAEC840 on the right cup. Looks like a solution, no?

EDIT: after going through translated version it sounds that author wasn't very happy with the sound. Can anyone speaking Japanese confirm?

Hmmm, interesting, those Shure pads on the 7520. I wonder how those will sound with the 7520. I see they sell those around here for € 15, so I ordered me a pair. Will let you guys know how it sounds.

It might give a more bass-heavy sound, and that would not be good atleast not to me.
