Just bought an open but unused pair on eBay for $100. Got 'em and now I'm thinking they are fakes.
 
Box looks legit, but is fairly worn so it's hard to tell. Phones do look new and unused.
 
Removable back can is plastic not aluminum.
Paper tape inside backcan for cable management.
1/4" adapter has green rings. But the body of the plug is solid silver with no hatched rings on it.
Blue "Professional" label is a bit crooked on the L can.
Sound is not as amazing as my V6's from years back. Don't have them to compare to now though.
 
Any of these for sure peg them as fakes?

If memory serves, the 7509 is comparable to the V900; there's a YouTube video for this (very commonly faked) headphone:

IIRC the UniMatch plugs are supposed to glow under a blacklight if they're legitimate - I don't know if that's true though (the video claims it is, but I have never tested it with my Sony cans).

I do know the "For Professional Use" stickers are just stickers though - it's plausible that they were goofed, but I've never seen one goofed. These are very, very, very commonly faked headphones (right up there with the ESW9 and Beats products) - and it's very common to find them on Ebay "brand new" for far less than SRP. I think these are supposed to go for $259.99, and street is realistically around $200 iirc.

Well, the seller you bought from only has 127 feedback score, and that's very little to be trusting a non authorized dealer. How's the sound quality? That's the real test to tell real from fake. If they are fake, you will know.

If it helps, you can check the place of manufacture, which is stamped into the headband near the junction where the metal extension forks are.  Real V900HDs/7509s are made in Thailand as far as I am aware of.

Yes it should be Thailand, like more or less every other modern Sony headphone (and those that aren't made in Thailand should all say Japan).

Hey, just recently saw an ad on craigslist for these headphones listed at $100. Been in talks with the owner about possibly picking them up.

Here's the link to the Craigslist ad, can anyone tell me if they are fake or not just by looking at the ad? He sent me a few pictures that il upload a little later.

Be super careful. They're selling so many fakes on ebay that it's ridiculous....and they often go for under $50, so this guy may be trying to pawn one off as the real deal. Of course it may  very well be legit. The real ones say 'made in japan' on the side, and i think they have a better plug....not sure the other differences.

Yeah at first I didn't even think of that but then I started reading around on the internet that there are a lot of fakes

He doesn't have the original packaging or the bag for the headphones anymore...
 
My biggest worry is that I won't actually be the one going to see them.  I don't live in LA so I'm asking my friend to pick them up for me so I'm trying to inform him as much as possible on what to watch out for..

it is quite weird that "professional" sticker in second photo is a bit angular.

BTW, it is quite obvious now, that plastic on these is very cheap..
 
EDIT2: Ok it seems that tehse have a million of different models, and blue/yellow sticker is possible also on genuine ones, lol. 
But still, I doubt that original one would be so uneven attached and the the plastic looks horrible. What, is more, interesting how heavily the saturation of these photos were modified... There should be a reason for that.

 There's literally millions of the same model cans with different plastic and stickers... So even now it's hard to tell for sure until you open them, looks like sony wanted these heaphones to be faked, lol. I peronally, wouldn't take a risk as it's more likely to be fake than a genuine one...
