I just bought a d34 but it only plays when upside down.Does anybody have any ideas?

Usually one of two reasons when this happens in a Discman. Either weak-or-misaligned laser (more prevalent) or some wear in the transport motor (heard of it but would be less likely IMO). Very little chance, in any event, of correcting the problem if it's that far gone. YMMV.

I can sympathize. I've got a very nice D35 that will skip on the first track unless it's placed vertically and no amount of laser adjustment tweaking helps...breaks my heart every time I try to fix it

The D35s seem to be particularly afflicted with the weak laser-skipping problem.
