I think it sucks you can't totally bypass the anti-skip... compressed or uncompressed.

Why does Sony still rate their headphone outputs on their PCDPs at a lower wattage than Panasonic's comparable PCDPs? Well, loudness definitely isn't one of the reasons. My 8mW Panasonic SL-CT790 isn't quite as loud overall as my 5mW Sony D-EJ1000 - but then Sony has chosen an op-amp that has a relatively high gain and a crappy, relatively low input impedance (compared to the op-amps in Panasonic's PCDPs) for use in its PCDPs. As a result, the Sony's headphone-out sounds louder, but it also sounds a bit loose and uncontrolled, and it tends to clip at moderate volume settings with low-impedance headphones. And that's due not only to the above facts about the op-amps used in Sony PCDPs, but also due to the fact that those op-amps have a relatively crappy damping factor and poor handling of high current.
