Hi,
I'm looking for a new source, and I can get this unit for around 700 dollars. Should I do it? or Should I get something else. Opinion please.

Thanks

its over priced.

you should get it for around $400.

I got mine for that much about a year ago.

It is a nice unit though. Dont believe the bs about newer is better.
Ive owned a few 3-4k units, and although they were marginally better in some regards, the x7--- players could still hold thier own.

The build quality is fantastic as well. Youll love how smoothly the drawer opens and closes. It has an excellent transport as well.

so when you can afford a nice dac, it will be a great xsport.

k.s.

Sure, the build quality and the smoothness of the drawer are top-notch. But as to the sound quality of the transport section (thus the digital output) I'm not too convinced: the Adiolab 8000CDM that replaced it in my case sounded more airy and natural, and my Philips DVD 963SA's transport now is very clearly superior to the Audiolab. So the conclusion...

BTW: the Philips as a CD player should be miles ahead compared to the X777ESD when it comes to sound quality. I wouldn't buy the Sony, the less so for that price. Also considering its remaining lifespan... It's been one of the best players at its time, but technical evolution is constantly progressing.

Are you talking about the SACD X777ES? Isn't that a $1900 (street)-$3000(retail) TOTL unit?

No, it's a 12 (or so) year old CD player (CDP-X777ES) which then costed about $ 1600.

The transport in the sony is the same one that accuphase uses in some of thier transports. I seriously doubt the philips can hold a candle to it. After listening to my scd-1, Linn Ikemi, metrenome cd-2v mkII, and now the moded 555es, the x7--- players can hold thier own. The Linn ikemi thus far has probably been the best.

My point of reference is my former cary 300 sei with sophia and nos tubes with the r10 and msp. It might be a little more revealing than an emp with senns. Then "airy" becomes accentuated and foreward and bright.

I have trouble to believe that such an old transport is built in in modern Accuphase players. However, the better sound of the Audiolab transport was clear enough to me, and so is the superiority of the Philips over the Audiolab (with Bel Canto DAC2). I don't get exactly what you compare with what: SCD-1, Ikemi, Metronome, 555ES, X7.. -- did you compare their transports or the whole players? If the former: with which DAC?

Well, actually I was using my (two) electrostatics quite often, and right now I've rediscovered the older one of them and use it regularly. I doubt that the R10 can hold a candle to it in terms of resolution.

As to the «airy»: the Audiolab had the smoother, more natural and airy highs, the X777ES's sounded more artificial and technical, more accentuated as well -- maybe exactly what you would call «forward and bright»... (this with a Theta Pro basic II DAC).

haha, seeing this reminded me of the new ES DVD/CD changer the 777ES, I saw it at Domes AV and it looks nice, but it wasn't playing anything, the build quality is A WHOLE LOT better than the other Sony stuff, and the DA1000 and DA2000 have a "push" thing to get the cover off the video/audio inputs on the front, it's just a plastic thing with pieces that hold it in place, HOW CHEAP!!, I mean, gosh, the thing's 600 dollars!!
