I see that hiss is a big issue, but is there a difference in sound quality besides the hiss?

The above is true, but it will vary - I can hear a white noise that might be categorized as hiss, but I have to listen for it and it is not audible during music - but it is there (A829/UM2). No doubt the intensity is dependent on your hearing ability as well (mine's probably so-so..). The noise is entirely absent with my cans (CD3k, CD780) or Ety4Ps. I had read that hiss was more noticeable with the A71x/A81x (there was an engine upgrade between A71x/A81x and A72x/A82x models) but have not really heard direct comparison testimony between A72x/A82x vs. S63x/73x - still only speculation at this point. If you plan to do any semi-serious listening with your DAP with higher end IEMs, I'd consider bypassing the older A81x: SQ is definitely upgraded in the A82x and will be the same or possibly better in the newer S63x/S73x. Good luck.

I hear no hiss listening to ATRAC on my A808 (same as the A818) through shure E4s or cheaper dynamic IEMs, nor on the px100, but it might be my age.

Just get the newer generation and be done with it though I notice no significant SQ improvement whatsoever.

You won't notice any unless you have very revealing cans or sensitive iems. The hiss on my a818 was quite apparent on my e530's, but on the s639 they are very quiet, as long as you don't turn the eq on

Also the high end sounds a little smoother than my a818. Not night and day by any means, but with the e530 I really appreciate the s639 sound sig. The hiss and the little edgy highs of the a818 were my only complaints and this seems to have been fixed with the 639.
