Darn right about Johnny Cash. But isn't using him kinda cheating? So many of the songs he sings even if he didn't write them are murder ballads.

Something like Banks of the Ohio http://www.lyricsondemand.com/j/john...hiolyrics.html or I Hung my Head http://www.lyricsondemand.com/j/john...eadlyrics.html

Here's a couple. Neil Young Down By the River
Yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
Down by the river
I shot my baby
Down by the river,
Dead, oh, shot her dead.

Neil Young Leave the Driving http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/neily...hedriving.html

How about afterwards? The Tragically Hip - Locked In The Trunk Of A Car

Morning broke out the backside of a truck-stop
End of a line a real, rainbow-likening luck stop,
Where you could say I became chronologically "****ed up"
Put ten bucks in just to get the tank topped off
Then I found a place it's dark and it's rotted

It's a cool, sweet kinda place where the copters won't spot it
And I destroyed the map, I even thought I forgot it, however,

Everyday I'm dumping the body
It'd be better for us if you don't understand
Even better for me if you don't understand (Yuh)

And I found a place it's dark and it's rotted
It's a cool, sweet kinda place where the copters won't spot it
And I destroyed the map that I carefully dotted, however,
Every-day I'm dumping the body
It'd be better for us if you don't understand
It'd be better for us if you don't understand
Better for me if you don't understand

Let me out let me out let me out let me out let me out let me out let me out

I already considered The Police's "Every Breath You Take" to be a prelude to a killing....

Quote:

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every band you break
Every step you take

I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay

I'll be watching you

Oh, can't you see
You belong to me
How my heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every smile you fake

I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I keep crying, baby, please

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Same with Dire Straits' "Where Do You Think You're Going?"

Quote:

Where do you think you're going?
Don't you know it's dark outside?
Where do you think you're going?
Don't you care about my pride?
Where do you think you're going?
I think that you don't know
You got no way of knowing
There's really no place you can go

I understand your changes
Long before you reach the door
I know where you think you're going
I know what you came here for
And now I'm sick of joking
You know I like you to be free
Where do you think you're going?
I think you better go with me girl

You say there is no reason
But you still find cause to doubt me
If you ain't with me girl
You're gonna be without me

Where do you think you're going?
Don't you know it's dark outside?
Where do you think you're going?
Don't you care about my pride?
And now I'm sick of joking
You know I like you to be free
So where do you think you're going?
I think you better go with me girl

'every breath you take'? lol...

ibunny you probably already know this one: "Jack the Ripper" - Morrissey. best version of the song appears on the CD "Beethoven was Deaf".

...And I know a place
Where no one is likely to pass
Oh, you don't care if it's late
And you don't care if you're lost
And oh, you look so tired
(But tonight you presumed too much)
Too much, too much
And if it's the last
Thing I ever do
I'M GONNA GET YOU

Crash into my arms
I WANT YOU
You don't agree -
But you don't refuse
I know you

And no one knows a thing about my life
I can come and go as I please
And if I want to, I can stay
Oh, or if I want to, I can leave
Nobody knows me
Nobody knows me
Nobody knows me...

Stagger Lee

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Based on the traditional song "Stagger Lee", "Stagolee" or "Stack O'Lee."

Hunter's solo version was re-ordered and Garcia rewrote the music for the Grateful Dead's version::

Nineteen forty, Xmas eve, with the full moon over town
Stagger Lee shot Billy DeLyon and he blew that poor boy down
Do you know what he shot him for, what do you make of that
'Cause Billy DeLyon threw lucky dice, won Stagger Lee's stetson hat

Baio, Baio, tell me how can this be
You go arrest the girls for turning tricks but you're scared of Stagger Lee
Stagger Lee is a mad man, and he shot my Billy dead
Baio go get him, or give the job to me

Delia, Delia, dear sweet Delia D
How the hell can I arrest him, when he's twice as big as me
Well don't ask me to go downtown, I wouldn't come back alive
Not only is that mother big, he packs a forty five

Baio, Delia said, just give me a gun
He shot my Billy dead and now I'm gonna see him hung
She waded to DeLyon's club through Billy DeLyon's blood
Stepped up to Stagger Lee at the bar, said buy me a gin fizz love

As Stagger Lee lit a cigarette, she shot him in the balls
Blew the smoke off her revolver, had him dragged to City Hall
Baio, Baio, see you hang him high
He shot my Billy dead and now he's got to die

Delia went a-walking down on Singapore Street
Three piece band on the corner played 'nearer my God to thee'
But Delia whistled a different tune, what tune could it be
The song that woman sang was look out Stagger Lee
The song that Delia sang was look out Stagger Lee

or an X-rated version:

Stagger Lee Lyrics
by Nick Cave

It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a Colt .45 and a deck of cards
Stagger Lee
He wore rat-drawn shoes and an old stetson hat
Had a '28 Ford, had payments on that
Stagger Lee
His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, "Never ever come back no more"
Stagger Lee
So he walked through the rain and he walked through the mud
Till he came to a place called The Bucket Of Blood
Stagger Lee
He said "Mr Motherf****r, you know who I am"
The barkeeper said, "No, and I don't give a good *******"
To Stagger Lee
He said, "Well bartender, it's plain to see
I'm that bad Motherf****r called Stagger Lee"
Mr. Stagger Lee
Barkeep said, "Yeah, I've heard your name down the way
And I kick motherf****ng asses like you every day"
Mr Stagger Lee
Well those were the last words that the barkeep said
'Cause Stag put four holes in his motherf****ng head
Just then in came a broad called Nellie Brown
Was known to make more money than any bitch in town
She struts across the bar, hitching up her skirt
Over to Stagger Lee, she starts to flirt
With Stagger Lee
She saw the barkeep, said, "O God, he can't be dead!"
Stag said, "Well, just count the holes in the motherf****r's head"
She said, "You ain't look like you scored in quite a time.
Why not come to my pad? It won't cost you a dime"
Mr. Stagger Lee
"But there's something I have to say before you begin
You'll have to be gone before my man Billy Dilly comes in,
Mr. Stagger Lee"
"I'll stay here till Billy comes in, till time comes to pass
And furthermore I'll screw Billy in his motherf****ng ass"
Said Stagger Lee
"I'm a bad motherf****r, don't you know
And I'll crawl over fifty good p*****s just to get one fat boy's a***ole"
Said Stagger Lee
Just then Billy Dilly rolls in and he says, "You must be
That bad mother****r called Stagger Lee"
Stagger Lee
"Yeah, I'm Stagger Lee and you better get down on your knees
And suck my ***k, because If you don't you're gonna be dead"
Said Stagger Lee
Billy dropped down and slobbered on his head
And Stag filled him full of lead
Oh yeah.

What's really strange is that there are all these songs from killers' points of view...

The Peter Gabriel song is called "Family Snapshot"

Also try "Vampire's View" by The Flower Kings

There's probably 100 Misfits songs that would work:

"Skulls"
the corpses all hang headless and limp
bodies with no surprises and the
blood drains down like devil's rain
we'll bathe tonight

i want your skulls
i need your skulls

"Last Caress"
Well I got something to say
I killed your baby today and it
Doesn't matter much to me
As long as it's dead

Also X's song "Johnny Hit and Run Paulene"

Great idea for a CD theme! I'm also doing a CD club with some friends, no one's had that idea yet!

How about "Sonny's Letter" by Linton Kwesi Johnson from the album "Forces of Victory".

Boy, that's the truth! But I'd go with maybe Nick Cave's best song of his career in "Mercy Seat". Written by he and Mick Harvey and first released on Tender Prey. The final thoughts of a killer getting his final reward in the electric chair. Bone chillingly brilliant southern-gothic music. Johnny Cash also did a very moving version on one of his final albums as well, American III: Solitary Man.
