Doesn't sound like you have any experience to me, at least not since a within a month of its 2006 release. I've been using Vista for well over a year now; my technically inexperienced family (mother, brother, sister) have been using it for 6 months, and none of us have encountered any of the problems you describe. There's not "multiple prompts" - there's a single prompt, and it only occurs when making system changes. How often do you change settings that require a UAC prompt or install/uninstall programs? I'm lucky to see 3-4 prompts a month. Vista is not bloated, nor is it buggy. It's running just fine on my Athlon XP/1GB RAM machine, and I haven't had a single system crash in my time using it.

I am a XP lover and a Vista Hater, still waiting for windows 7 to come and get good before i build the next pc so i am reading all your comments closely.

Vista to me tries way to hard to get up ur ass and prevent you from making mistakes or at least what it thinks is a mistake. also Vista to me needs to much time to start and shut down, also needs big stupid specs to run smoothly...


anyway is Windows 7 anywhere close to Vista in the ways i really can not stand Vista?

mind you i am not up to skill level as most of you so be easy in the answers..

if 7 sucks when it comes out then i have no choice but to switch over to a mac...and i really don't wanna do that..really!

now i did say i liked vista but it is bloated and does some very annoying things. now i dont think vista istelf is buggy so much but one laptop i have was an absolute nightmare when i first got it as the vista drivers for it were so old and the machine couldnt go 3 hours without bluescreening. now with hacked drivers it works perfectly but had i been your average comp user id have probably blamed vista rather than the crappy drivers.

having loaded up win 7 in virtual pc i cant say i think i like the look of it with the new task bar but mostly it just isnt right now offering me any good reason to want it over vista

Vista hater here..have xp64 bit and ubuntu 64 bit running on my box..


First mpressions..

The beta looks much better than vista..UI movement is much smoother and pleasing.

no problems with audio.

Speaking of which, is anyone switching from Mac OS X to Windows 7? I switched over to the Jobs side from XP, but perhaps 7 would give me a reason to switch back...

Yeah, I'm the same. I appreciate the improvements Vista made and the effect is had on the ecosystem (pushing developers to write better programs and drivers). But when push comes to shove it annoys me to no end. And I understand that it _should_ get faster over time, but aside from starting apps it only got slower and slower for me. It just never lived up to the promise. So I'm also really hoping for 7 to be _it_, cause I really don't like Mac or Linux any more than I do Vista

At this point, 7 has fixed almost everything I hated about Vista. From GUI to UAC to performance. I'm even using Media Player right now instead of Winamp and VLC and liking it so far: out of the box codec support and the integration of libraries is great. However, I was originally also pretty happy with Vista, so things might change...

You DO realize that Mac and Linux have the exact same permissions model as Vista and require administrator confirmation any time you install a program or change a system setting, right?

And once again, I point out: I've run Vista for a year on an Athlon XP 2800+/1GB of RAM system. I've even gamed on it just fine.

I don't mind Vista at all, and I even like it once I take care of the annoyances.

The permissions model in Linux is much less intrusive than that of Vista. Vista asks you for every single change, where Linux gives you root permissions for a short time.

UAC is indeed still not as nice as sudo. I don't see why it wouldn't just give me a 10 minute timeframe after I elevate, similar to what happens in Linux. I'm just glad it isn't so much of a deal breaking issue anymore.

I have Windows 7 x64 installed in a virtual machine, and the main feature I'm looking forward to is the new version of cleartype. Windows 7 does a much better job of tuning font hints than Vista does.

I won't install the beta as my primary OS, esp. since I would have to reformat to install RTM Win7.

Have you ever used VMS? VMS isn't a bad server OS, and in fact was excellent for its time, but it's not at all suitable for a desktop OS. Cutler was smart enough to realize that, thankfully.
