So this is how massive overspending begins...

Definitely a dac1 or something like that. If you're willing to spend that much, you can either kill two birds with one stone with a combo package from audio-gd or something like the grace902 would be nice.

I think the Benchmark DAC-1 has a headphone amp built into it. I've read that overall, it's a better unit than the Grace 902. It's also about $500 less.

I am assuming most of that spending would be toward home theater/speakers and what not?

Yeah sorry. The grace was on my mind since i saw it on the forums. Definitely get the DAC 1 if you want a good dac and a decent headphone amp. I personally think an audio-gd combo would be better but if you want to get a DAC/amp, the DAC1 should suffice.

Nice cans!! HA! I believe in a one box cd player solution. A used Rotel RCD 1072 ($400-500) would be much better than the DVD player you are using now. No offense intended. A used SS amp ($300-400) would put you in a sweet spot cost vs. value wise and either could be sold down the line for not much less that what you paid, when upgraditis strikes again (and it will...sorry about your wallet!)

I had been contemplating a high-end CD player like Sony ES 5400 or a Cambride Audio 840.

However, from my understanding, a (DVD player + high-end DAC via digital output) is equivalent to a high-end CD player, except that (1) the CD player's presumably better transport might reduce jitter by a few precious microseconds (which I don't care about) and (2) the CD player has one less power cord and less power consumption. Aside from these issues I would rather keep my DVD player and purchase the Benchmark DAC-1. If I'm missing something, please let me know.

HD800 are the most expensive option, but yeah it saves money in the long run to only have one pair of cans that's completely worthwhile (well that and a pair for travel, etc).

No, it's easy to get that far in with several good pairs of headphones, a couple of amps, and quality analog and digital sources.

The sources will carry over to a speaker rig, but you still need to spend a fair bit on speakers and an appropriate amp if you go that route.

I guess lol. I am still new to this whole high end audio thing but I am loving it.
