Board comes with a supercap installed, it is smaller then the Eaton TV supercaps I used

The additional power sequencing relay is needed only if a bigger cap is used.
The board comes with a 1.2F cap which charges up to 5V in about 60secs.




Connection is quite simple.

In the event that I get my Kitsune SU-2 up and running, I think I may take a stab at the supercap mod. Basically putting this assembly in between the output of the power supply and the main board, correct @b0bb? Also, the Belleson SPX installed on the power supply. Would you happen to have a link to the correct MFG PN or is it the SPX78 in 5V? How did you actually mounts yours? I see nylon hardware in your photo but there aren't any screw hole openings on the PCB

Check the part number on the stock regulator,
if it is a NatSemi pinout,use SPX17 5V (https://www.belleson.com/store/SPX-Max-Performance/SPX17-Positive-Output)
if it is a Motorola pinout,use SPX78 5V (https://www.belleson.com/store/SPX-Max-Performance/SPX78-Positive-Output)

Take a photo of the regulator and post it here.
The 1A transformer also needs to be replaced with a higher current supply. I am using a 9V 3A DC supply.

I used hot melt glue. You can probably do better. I needed something quick and easy without drilling into the board.
You can see the glue on the standoff on the board.

@fmzip, the power supply regulator will have to be upgraded to take advantage of the supercap
Supercaps increase the transient current demand from the supply.

This mod changes the regulator to a 5V@3A Belleson SPX78

The Schottky diode bridge reduces the voltage drop by 0.7-1V, about 20% of the supply voltage.
This helps as the voltage will drop as large currents are pulled into the supercap.

Hi b0bb, is there a reason you opted for the SMT diode versus the thruhole? I purchased the one you linked but it’s too small for the pads. Looks like there's enough room for one. If so, would this work as I have a few on hand?

You can use the SR805s if they fit on the board.

The ones I used were leftover from another mod, ultra low leakage.
Regular Schottky's can be quite leaky as temperature increases and this lets thru noise from the other side.
Check the datasheet for the SR805 and compare it to the one I used.

I used tinned copper PCB track repair strips with adhesive backs to bridge the gap.
I was making use of what I had in hand.
The copper tracks helps keep the diodes cool to minimize leakage issues.

OSHPark shared projects may have something more elegant.
